Job Description
We are looking for an Epidemiologist to conduct analyses using the Johns Hopkins Epidemiologic and Economic Model (JHEEM) of local HIV transmission in the US. The primary goal of JHEEM is to inform local public health policy in prioritizing interventions most likely to be effective in reducing HIV transmission at the local level.
We are looking for someone who is motivated and excited to learn and interested in using epidemiological skills in a computational framework to improve public health and help end the HIV epidemic.
JHEEM is a modeling platform that answers high-level public health questions such as how much would increasing HIV testing reduce incidence over a decade? using a rigorous, statistical framework. JHEEM runs large numbers of simulations at the city- and state-level to project a range of possible outcomes after implementing HIV-related interventions, to help inform decision-making. The model is coded in R and large-scale simulations are carried on cloud computing servers. Our projections are freely available online at www.jheem.org
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
The Epidemiologist will work closely with statistical and public health experts.
Ensure that the models code is maintained in a fashion that keeps it relevant for answering key public health questions.
Write custom code in R and/or other general programming language to facilitate simulations.
Run simulations on a distributed computing cluster.
Implement differential equation solvers and Bayesian statistical analyses.
Curate epidemiological data from the CDC and local public health agencies.
Update the web interface and present new results using that interface.
Complete and maintain professional documentation for projects and deliverables.
Minimum Qualifications
Master's Degree in Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Statistics, or related field, with PhD preferred.
Ten years related experience required.
Doctoral level requires at least five years of experience.
Familiarity with simulation modeling
Preferred Qualifications
Additional consideration will be given to applicants with these skills,
Experience in HIV epidemiology.
Familiarity with the R programming language.
Solid planning and organizational skills, ability to prioritize work independently and work for periods of time without daily direction from investigators.
