EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT PREPAREDNESS COORDINATOR
EMERGENCY COMMUNICATIONS
CITY OF WORCESTER

The City of Worcester seeks qualified applicants for the position of Emergency Management Preparedness Coordinator. Under the supervision of the Deputy Director of Emergency Management, this position is responsible for the accurate and timely preparation of City Emergency Plans, coordination of preparedness projects, coordination, and administration of the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) and response to incidents requiring Emergency Management staff. This position will be responsible for speaking to large crowds, large groups of stakeholders, and groups of city residents; as well as build relationships with all municipal departments. The individual in this position will assist in the distribution of supplies as needed and/or requested by the Director and Deputy Director. This position may work within the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) and assume leadership responsibility for the planning section during operations. This position has on call responsibility which may require work outside of regular working hours, extended hours of work, and/or weekend work.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to work in an outside environment and in all types of weather conditions
  • Knowledge and understanding of laws/policies/regulations/procedures related to Emergency Management
  • Detail oriented with a high degree of accuracy
  • Be self-directed and able to complete projects with limited supervision
  • Strong understanding of the field of Emergency Management, with a working knowledge of Police, Fire, and EMS operations
  • Have an interest in and sensitivity toward working with diverse populations
  • Computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office Word, Outlook, & Excel
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Knowledge and understanding of various Emergency Management plans and documents
  • Ability to drive sport utility and/or pick-up type vehicles with trailers
  • Ability to work as part of a team and independently
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills and flexibility

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Emergency Management, Criminal Justice, Business/Public Administration, or related field

o An equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job may be considered in lieu of the above requirements.

  • Must be able to obtain National Incident Management System certification to a level of ICS-300 or greater within 6 months of employment
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Prior experience working with populations who are vulnerable in disasters
  • Prior experience working with municipal, state, and/or federal public safety agencies
  • Three to five (3-5) years of comparable full-time work experience in an emergency management, logistics, preparedness, community engagement, or other comparable public safety role, of which at least one (1) year must be in a supervisory capacity.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience with all hazard’s disaster planning
  • Master’s Degree in Emergency Management, Criminal Justice, Business/Public Administration, or related field
  • Experience in coordinating preparedness projects
  • Experience in managing large groups of volunteers and/or citizens
  • Prior operational experience in an Emergency Operations Center (EOC)

SALARY RANGE: $63,657 - $83,402 annually, fulltime, exempt, with an excellent benefits package
