What To Expect
Tesla is seeking an ambitious Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) Specialist to collaborate with Vehicle Quality & Laboratory operations and advise on a variety wide range of technical EHS programs at Giga Texas located in Austin, Texas. This role offers the potential opportunity for future growth in technical and leadership roles. The EHS Specialist will be expected to apply human and organizational principles to drive ownership of safety, health, and environmental impacts, with a focus on engagement, learning from events, and systems-level problem solving. The EHS Specialist will develop, implement, and continuously improve programs within the EHS Management System framework in partnership with the broader EHS, Facilities, and Construction operations teams. They will be expected to reduce risk and ensure compliance with federal, state, and local environmental, health, and safety regulations, and conformance to internal and consensus standards.

What You’ll Do
- Proactively work as a key stakeholder on behalf of the Tesla EHS to ensure that factory changes result in improved controls of risks to health, safety, and the environment.
- Execute laboratory safety and environmental compliance efforts to ensure compliance with EHS&S programs, federal, state, and local regulations.
- Partner with EHS functional teams to plan, communicate, and support the Vehicle Quality and sitewide Lab operations.
- Coach, mentor and/or directly supervise other EHS team members.
- Ensure Tesla EHS Management System elements are applied effectively throughout Vehicle Quality, and Lab Operations. Develop new procedures, inspections, trainings, or reports as needed.
- Assist with field work EHS-impacts oversight, participating in pre-job planning and verification of controls and safeguards before starting work.
- Work with stakeholders on risk reduction projects to mitigate risk in the field for Quality Inspectors and in the laboratory setting.
- Facilitate incident investigations using a Learning Teams approach, ensuring that preventative actions address system causes and not just individual behaviors.
- Experience leading EHS high-hazard program development, training all levels of personnel, and influencing/managing change.
- Previous experience writing and implementing a Chemical Hygiene Plan required.
- Previous experience as a Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) and/or Laser Safety Officer (LSO) a plus but not required.
- Excellent people skills.
- Minimum 3-5 years work experience as an EHS professional - Chemical Hygiene Officer experience required, manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, heavy chemical industry, research and development, oil & gas, or similar workplace.
- Preference for candidates with extensive experience supporting lab safety programs, procurement, use and disposal of hazardous and/or lab chemicals, respiratory protection programs, health risk assessments, NFPA 70E, Process Safety Management, International Building and Fire Code compliance, and life safety monitoring systems work.
- Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Work, Power Point, Project, etc.).
- Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) and Certified Safety Professional (CSP) both preferred, but not required.
- Ability to work effectively and efficiently under pressure while managing competing demands and tight deadlines.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Safety Engineering, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Health or related field.
