Job Summary

Department-Specific Responsibilities

  • Designs Application-Specific integrated Circuits (ASICs) for extreme environments.
  • Writes paper, technical report, and grant proposals.
  • Develops and simulates logic designs using Verilog or VHDL.
  • Helps set future research goals.
  • Delivers on research objectives.
  • Supervises and trains undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Designs, layouts, and tests of Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs).
  • Synthesizes logic designs.
  • Maintains Linux workstations and Computer Aided Design (CAD) software installations.

General Responsibilities

  • Provides highest level of technical expertise to meet project requirements, enhance and extend implementations, and assist scientific collaborators, faculty, and researchers on system usage and functionality.
  • Develops technical documentation for electronics as needed and may assist faculty and/or students with research publications.
  • Designs and constructs electronics and/or electronic systems in support of research experiments (such as intricate analog and digital circuitries).
  • Collaborates with co-workers, management, faculty, staff, and students to execute highly coordinated instrumentation development to support research objectives.
  • Engages and collaborates with researchers on projects and grant development.
  • Repairs, tests and adjusts instrumentation to ensure optimal working order, including performing high-level repairs with extended reversed engineering; communicates with users, such as instructing on the safe handling of the device in question and explaining the problems and solutions.
  • Maintains and prepares documentation for electronics and/or electronic systems and improves the performance of existing research systems.
  • Provides estimates for labor and material costs associated with system design and construction; oversees the construction and installation of systems; participates in proposals for future construction projects; develops project objectives, budgets, work plans and implementation strategies.

EDUCATION
Required

  • Bachelor's degree (preferably in electrical engineering, electronic engineering, or related field)

Preferred

  • Master's Degree (preferably in computer engineering OR electrical engineering)

WORK EXPERIENCE
Required

  • 5 or more years electronics design or related experience

Working Conditions / Demands

This role requires the ability to remain in a stationary position as well as the ability to move about the workplace for long durations. It requires effective communication, the ability to operate machinery, tools, and controls. The role requires the ability to ascend/descend ladders/stairs, and to position one's self in low level positions, detect a variety of chemicals and/or gases. The role requires the ability to ascend to rooftops and move in tight spaces to perform and complete inspections. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
