Hardie Grant North America, a division of the award-winning Australian publisher, Hardie Grant Books is hiring an Editorial Assistant. Based in Berkeley, CA, Hardie Grant North America produces high-quality illustrated books in the areas of food and drink, design, nature, and gardening.
Reporting to the Publisher, the Editorial Assistant will provide administrative and editorial support. This role requires razor-sharp attention to detail, strong written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to work in a highly collaborative environment. The Editorial Assistant will liaise with authors, literary agents, as well as with other members of the editorial, production, marketing, and publicity departments, and freelance workers.Self-motivated and independent, this person will actively contribute as part of a small team.
The ideal candidate will be enthusiastic about books and bookmaking, and have a particular interest in food and cooking, and/or nature, design, and gardening. They will have a strong work ethic, and a commitment to both the detailed work of making complex books, and the high-level thinking that fuels this creative endeavor. In addition to developing a strong knowledge of operational systems, the Editorial Assistant will have an eye for identifying trends and talent.
The scope of the role is to:
- Provide editorial and administrative support
- Coordinate with other in-house departments and freelance workers
- Create and manage book schedules
- Assist in project management, including reviewing copyedits, responding to author edits, and preparing manuscripts for design
- Write sales and consumer-facing copy
- Read and evaluate proposals, research comparative titles, and draft profit and loss statements
- Generate freelance-worker agreements and coordinate payment
Experience & skills required:
- Strong interest in and knowledge of food trends and cooking
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Positive, entrepreneurial spirit
- Strong organizational, multi-tasking skills, especially with tight deadlines
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with team members and authors
- Impeccable proofreading skills and attention to detail
