This is a Term-Of-Project position, expected to last for eight months.


The Secondary Math Editorial team is a collaborative group with a strong team culture; we value and encourage input from all team members. The Math Editor position requires a strong background, including pedagogy, in secondary mathematics (Grade 6-12). Editors assist in all phases of a project with primary emphasis on writing and editing manuscripts and/or ancillaries and provide constructive feedback to team members as necessary. With supervision, Editors coordinate with Design, Production, Digital Production, and other departments from manuscript stage to final product and may oversee work of freelancers and/or development houses.


The Editor knows the subject matter for his/her assigned area and uses that knowledge to develop competitive offerings. The Editor is knowledgeable about all of the “details” in the plan for the assigned project, including specs, writing guidelines, and the plan details for RFPs (if appropriate). The Editor relies on guidance from his/her direct supervisor to ensure that the evolving product meets the objectives of the plan, its budget, and its schedule.


Primary Responsibilities


  • Ensure that product responds to customer needs.
  • With supervision, write and edit manuscripts.
  • Write and provide art specs for artists and photo researchers. Participate in evaluation of sketches and choice of photos.
  • Ensure compliance with state standards and assessments.
  • Oversee work of in-house editors, freelancers, and outside developers.
  • Participate in planning assigned projects; make creative suggestions that reflect an understanding of the marketplace and an awareness of customer needs.
  • Working with Product Management and Marketing, analyze competition and market trends and incorporate findings into program.
  • Monitor appropriateness of text material as to reading level, content accuracy and currency, freedom of bias, and teachability.
  • Participate, as appropriate, in market research efforts (e.g. prepare sample lessons, attend focus groups, etc.)


Supervisory responsibilities (direct and indirect)


Manages in-house and freelance staff on a limited basis to complete assigned projects.


Required Knowledge And Experience


Related work experience


  • Experience in curriculum development or the development of instructional materials.
  • Relevant editorial experience.
  • Must be knowledgeable regarding educational methodologies and instructional design.
  • Teaching experience preferred.


Formal education or equivalent


  • A BA/BS in a related field required.


Skills


  • Commands work habits that are highly productive, working efficiently to develop quality content.
  • Must be able to utilize constructive feedback to refine skills and reduce mistakes.
  • Able to create and deliver content in a format suitable for digital products.
  • Able to respond quickly in an environment of changing priorities. Must be able to set relevant priorities on a daily basis and meet deadlines.
  • Proficient user of computers and software programs including MS Word, Excel, and Power Point.
  • Knows how to translate knowledge of math and math teaching into formats that meet customer needs.
  • Must be strategic and efficient in planning and executing to ensure consistent on-time delivery of product.
  • Proactive in anticipating, evaluating, and solving for issues to avoid disruptions in workflow.
  • Demonstrates ability to write original content, and to edit and rewrite content generated by others, to meet standards of accuracy, style, grade level, and market need.
  • Displays self-confidence in actively participating in meetings and open forums.
  • Must display a “customer focus” in working with teams to conceptualize marketable product.
  • Promotes sense of teamwork and works to reduce team barriers and conflicts.
  • Exhibits good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Understands the production process for print and digital instructional materials.
