Job Description

The New Jersey Attorney General’s Office is looking for a Special Assistant to function as a Deputy Attorney General 2 for the Division of Law in Trenton, NJ. The salary range for this position is $110,546.27 to $158,260.13 per year.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT:

The Attorney General has broad oversight of the state’s legal and law enforcement matters. As the head of the Department of Law & Public Safety, the Attorney General supervises a wide range of Divisions, Offices, and Commissions, consisting of over 2,800 sworn law enforcement officers, 600 attorneys, and thousands of other public servants.

ABOUT THE DIVISION:

The Division of Law was created on March 7, 1944. In the performance of its mission, the Division of Law has a broad scope of work. Whether it is in protecting an abused child, ensuring that a polluter pays fair cleanup costs, or defending the State against a claim, the approximately 500 Deputy Attorneys General that comprise the Division of Law each day put forth their best efforts. The Division is responsible for approximately 29,000 legal matters pending in federal and State trial and appellate courts and administrative forums. Of these, some 13,000 are litigation matters pending in trial courts; approximately 11,000 are administrative cases pending in the Office of Administrative Law and Worker’s Compensation Court; and 1,700 are appeals before State and federal appellate courts, including the New Jersey and U.S. Supreme Courts. In addition, the Division of Law provides legal advice and counsel to the Governor and all departments, boards and commissions within State government.

While the number of attorneys assigned to the Division may appear large, when the legal work generated by the 16 Departments and over 400 agencies of State government is allocated among these attorneys, the individual workload of each Deputy Attorney General becomes substantial.

ABOUT THE SECTION:

The Litigation Practice Group handles all defensive litigation involving state agencies, including personal injury (Title 59) and employment litigation. The Practice Group’s attorneys are involved in all stages of litigation, from the initial briefing through arbitration or trial, and regularly appear in state and federal court at both the trial and appellate levels. Cases range from wrongful deaths to negligent conduct by state employees to constitutional equal protection and due process claims.

ABOUT THE POSITION:

Under the supervision of the Director and the Deputy Director in charge of the LPG, the Special Assistant to the Director will:

  • Performs extensive research and writing on complex legal issues;
  • Works on statewide initiatives and projects advanced by LPG;
  • Assists with interpretation and analysis of law, regulations and other official instrumentalities;
  • Perform other related duties as assigned or required.
