Job Description

Director of Operations

Key assets of the individual will include intelligence and problem-solving capabilities as well as analytical and critical thinking capabilities coupled with leadership, management, interpersonal and strong, regimented processes and attention to detail.


POSITION SUMMARY

The Operations Director leads and manages day-to-day operations for the plant in Iowa and one in the northeast, including production, supply chain, logistics, maintenance and sanitation. The successful director will develop, implement and maintain a variety of strategies to maximize profits while maintaining a high level of quality, as well as work on improving the supply chain to positively impact variables such as cost, quality and delivery time. The Director also provides oversight and guidance to subordinates, as well as timely feedback, reporting and guidance for both subordinates and upper management on operations-related issues.

Operations Director must have a thorough knowledge of the company's products and services, as well as the industry. They will also have responsibility for production output, product quality, inventory management, logistics, inventory purchasing, and on-time shipping.

The Operations Director will provide leadership for the overall operating performance of the assigned functional areas including:

  • Evaluate operational processes and procedures, and develop strategies and implementation plans to improve and standardize all aspects of operations.
  • Develop, monitor and administer operating and efficiency programs, reporting, KPIs and other metrics to drive efficiencies and ensure quality.
  • Hire, train and develop new resources across the Plants.


The operations director will maintain optimal and efficient operation by assigning workers, creating and keeping work and production schedules as well as hiring and training new team members. They will manage and facilitate the collection and analysis of data for reporting and KPI monitoring as well as to determine opportunities for improvement and efficiency gain. They also monitor worker safety and plant safety, monitor production equipment, and manage plant assets including repair or replacement of equipment when needed.


The Operation’s Director is the last line of defense for quality control when the item manufactured leaves the operations. They communicate with other departments or parts of the operations to make sure everything runs smoothly.


Additionally, the successful candidate will have strong leadership, attention to detail, experience in scaling an organization from Small to Mid-Sized to large $100M+ company, and industry best practices in their areas of operations, leadership and management. Further the role will require strong communication and interpersonal skills as a leader and a team player.

  • Must be able to quickly ascertain a situation and be decisive in solving it, such as identifying defects in the production line or processes.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Plan, organize, direct and run optimum day-to-day operations to exceed our customers’ expectations as well as set and maintain productivity and quality standards at the plants.

  • Help exceed Company Operations and Margin KPIs and Goals
  • Monitor operations and trigger corrective actions.
  • Oversee Supply Chain, Warehouse and Materials Management departments
  • Implement strategies in alignment with executive and strategic initiatives and provide a clear sense of direction and focus for the team and for the organization.
  • Oversees the daily sales and Operations of the Plants
  • Develop, manage and monitor reporting, KPIs and metrics for all areas and departments under management.
  • Stay up to date with latest production management best practices and concepts
  • Oversee inventory in the plants
  • Develop systems and processes that track and optimize productivity and standards, metrics and performance targets to ensure effective return on assets
  • Manage Vendor relations
  • Oversee the plants procedures and policies
  • Maintain OSHA compliance
  • Hire train and evaluate core team members
  • Develop, enhance and manage monthly, weekly and daily production planning and execution.
  • Be responsible for production output, product quality and on-time shipping.
  • Schedule Plant meetings, Safety meetings and Staff meetings
  • Work with Purchasing, Accounts Payable and Finance, R&D, Quality and the Executive Leadership Team
  • Schedule Maintenance and upkeep of the plant facility including critical failure points and adequate redundancy and backup planning and processes
  • Collect and analyze data to find places of opportunity, waste, overtime or inefficiency.
  • Allocate resources effectively and fully utilize assets to produce optimal results.
  • Ensure Customer excellence and delivery of Quality products.
  • Address employees’ issues or grievances through their operational structure and along with HR
  • Commit to Operations safety procedures.
  • Share a trusting relationship with workgroup and recruit, manage and develop Operations staff.
  • Influence and learn from below and above
  • Increase production, assets capacity and flexibility while minimizing unnecessary costs and maintaining current quality standards.


REQUIREMENTS

  • Be knowledgeable of safety, quality, productivity, demand creation, inventory and stewardship processes.
  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Computer literacy including MS office suite.
  • Ability to scale and best practices experience and knowledge.
  • Proven managerial experience.
  • Adequate knowledge of business and management principles (budgeting, strategic planning, resource allocation and human resources).
  • Familiarity with industry standard equipment and technical expertise.
  • Proven work experience as an Operations Director –in a food manufacturing and packaging environment.
  • Strong team building, decision-making and people management skills.
  • Ability to create accountability and to lead by example.
