Job Summary

The Office of Admissions at CU Boulder welcomes applications for the Director of International Admissions! This position reports to the Assistant Vice Chancellor of Admissions (AVC). It involves significant leadership and participation in the development and administration of international admission policies and procedures and the management and coordination of international admissions-related programs and activities as they relate to the recruitment and operations of international undergraduate and graduate applicants.

The Director of International Admissions leads the development and implementation of an international recruitment plan to attract and retain an academically talented and diverse undergraduate and graduate student population to the University of Colorado Boulder. This role provides critical leadership in setting new direction for strategic recruitment and programmatic efforts, customer service functions, budget planning and analysis, staff training and recruitment/admissions/yield data analysis. This role will also assess efficiencies and process improvement in application processing and credential evaluations.

This has overall administrative responsibility for international recruitment, application processing, and credential evaluation within the Office of Admissions. This position supervises university staff, classified staff, and student staff members and is responsible for designing, implementing, and evaluating programs and systems to support international recruitment, communication, and undergraduate selection. The Director will work with partnership agreements, vendor relationships, student search process, territory management, and counselor engagement. The Director will participate in campus and system-wide committees.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

  • Functions as part of the admissions office senior leadership team working in close partnership with the Assistant Vice Chancellor of Admissions. Oversees the Senior Assistant Directors who lead the operations and recruitment branches of international admission. Leads the international admissions efforts including the development and implementation of a comprehensive international graduate and undergraduate admission strategy and a strategic international recruitment plan (both graduate and undergraduate) for the University. Recommends new strategies, partnerships, programs, and technologies that target the objectives and quality of both undergraduate and graduate admissions, recruitment staff, sponsored students, pathway partnerships, and English Language Centers. Maintains a close relationship with Director of Operations, Director of Admissions Marketing, and Director of Domestic Recruitment to preserve operational and recruitment consistency and collaborate on new initiatives.
  • Serves as a highly visible member of the university community and is expected to be a leader in the field of international admissions on the state, national, and international levels. Closely collaborates with campus and state partners (International English Center, Graduate School, Alumni Association, New Student and Family Programs, International Student and Scholar Services, Study Colorado, Colorado/Wyoming International Educators, Global Engagement Office) and global partners (Department of State, EducationUSA, US Commercial Service, and Ministries of Education). Provides leadership, supervision, and mentorship to members of the international recruitment and operation teams and helps staff members develop new skills and maintain enthusiasm and commitment to office priorities. Coordinates, manages, trains, supervises, and evaluates university and classified staff members. Participates in staff development activities including university workshops, conferences and programs, and state and national professional organizations.
  • Provides the office with data analysis and market research which will assist in recruitment efforts and real time decision making. This responsibility includes the management and ROI analysis of lead generation efforts with third party vendors. Evaluates current international admission requirements and policies including, but not limited to, English proficiency and academic rigor by geography. Manages and assesses operational efficiencies for application processing and credential evaluations.
  • Provides admissions-related information to prospective international students through travel and by telephone, in office or virtual appointments, and through correspondence. Participates in admissions recruitment programs on campus, in high schools, community college and college fairs. Maintains a small, but impactful, recruitment territory. Serves as the international Athletics liaison for Admissions; performing admissibility checks for all international prospective student-athletes.

The salary range for this position is $128,000 - $140,000 annually.

What We Require

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Six (6) years of progressively more responsible and independent management experience in a collegiate admissions office, with extensive knowledge of policies and procedures related to recruitment, application processing, credential evaluation, and admission of international students.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license as well as motor vehicle records background checks.
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute.

  • Demonstrated experience in oral presentations to large and small audiences, including prospective students and families, colleagues, and professional organizations.
  • Demonstrated experience establishing and accomplishing short- and long-term goals and objectives.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of customer service as it relates to prospective students and their families, counselors and alumni who visit or seek information or services.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills including the ability to effectively motivate staff members in the accomplishment of the goals and objectives of the unit.
  • Relevant experience working with people from diverse backgrounds and demonstrated sensitivity to those issues affecting underrepresented students in higher education and families, including relevant experience in educational outreach to disadvantaged students and the organizations that support these efforts.
  • Demonstrated experience in conceptualizing, planning, implementing and driving admissions, recruitment, evaluation, and yield activities.
  • Demonstrated effective interpersonal skills and excellent public speaking and writing skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and make independent decisions.
  • Demonstrated advocacy for staff needs and openness to feedback and recognition of opportunities.
  • Demonstrated management and supervisory skills working with staff and student employees to implement and manage programs related to the function of the office.
  • Demonstrated experience with staff training and development.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the values and benefits of diversity and inclusion with the ability to relate to and collaborate well with diverse faculty, administration, staff, students, families and the general public.

What We Would Like You to Have

  • Relevant experience in educational outreach to international students and organizations.
  • A minimum of seven (7) years of progressively more responsible and independent management experience in a college admission office AND;
  • Knowledge of immigration and F-1 student visa requirements.
  • Ten (10) years of job-related experience, including supervision with:
  • A minimum of 3 or more years of additional experience, either in a college admissions office or outside of admissions working in another office of higher education, or equivalent experience in a related field.
  • Experience with Slate and other related admissions office technologies.
