The Harley-Davidson Motor Company Corporate Headquarters in Milwaukee, WI is the site where the first H-D factory - a wooden shed - was built in 1903 in the backyard of the William C. Davidson family home. Join our team as a Director of Human Resources - Hybrid.


The Director of Human Resources is a Sr Director level role and reports to the Chief Human Resources Officer. This role is responsible for directing the strategy on the people-related matters impacting the business including Global Commercial Sales, Global Manufacturing, Product Development, and Corporate Functions. You will collaborate with the executive team, HR leadership and other HR Centers of Excellence (Talent, Total Rewards, HR Shared Services, etc.) to deploy initiatives in the area of rewards, employee relations, and talent management. You will work collaboratively with your peer group in the effective development of strategies to ensure rewards, employee relations, policy, succession planning, etc., have the desired outcome for the business. The Director Human Resources provides guidance to a team of Human Resources Directors/Managers who provide consultation to business leaders and line managers on the people-related matters impacting their business.

To be successful in this role you must be able to lead through ambiguity and collaborate with multiple stakeholders. You must be creative, yet data focused, and not afraid of pushing boundaries to take risks.


Job Responsibilities

  • Integrated Business Solutions: Works with a team of embedded HR Directors, Managers, and Professionals to help them align and integrate the strategic capabilities of the company's human resources with business unit objectives. Identifies emerging human capital challenges and trends (internally and externally) within the business units supported and sponsors efforts to create improvement opportunities and effective solutions with business impact.
  • May require travel - up to 10%.
  • Act as a strategic partner with the HR and Executive leadership team to ensure that all people related matters, talent management, and HR compliance aligns with the strategic goals of the company and support driving a high-performance culture.
  • Strategy Development and Execution: Supports organizational effectiveness through proper alignment of people, processes, structure, and culture with business strategies. Helps translate strategy into solutions, actions, and results. Assesses the impact of business decisions on the workforce and provides solutions to optimize opportunities and mitigate any downsides.
  • HR Consultation Management: Advises and counsels leaders and employees on people related matters; works collaboratively with COE and embedded resources to accomplish the following activities (e.g., change initiatives, employee relations interventions, talent development/acquisition and performance management, organizational learning and development, business diagnostics, productivity analyses, retention and engagement assessment, employee communication, and HR programs and services) in support of business goals.


Education Specifications

  • A bachelor's degree in a related field is required.


Experience Requirements


This role typically requires a minimum of 15 years related experience with at least 5 years of management experience. In addition, the successful candidate will have demonstrated the following:

  • Experience leading global people related matters for global organization. Experience with a union workforce preferred.
  • A team player with excellent interpersonal and strong "people skills", outstanding verbal communication skills on an individual and group basis, excellent writing skills, negotiating skills, and executive demeanor.
  • Possess general management perspective and business acumen, including financial and strategic capability.
  • Technical expertise in the effective handling of employee relations issues, arbitration and grievances.
  • A catalyst for change, including problem solving, innovative transformation, relationship and role influence.
  • A strategic thinker who can approach Human Resources from a "big picture" perspective.
  • An assertive, pragmatic, "hands-on" Human Resources leader with a "bottom line" approach to management.

The pay range shown represents the national average pay range for this role. Your pay may be more or less than the stated range and is dependent on your geographic location and level of experience.
