The Team


As the Director of Engineering for Operational Excellence, you will own the overall reliability, availability, and latency of our core product and surrounding applications running in our cloud production environments (AWS, Kubernetes/OpenShift). This role requires the ability to work independently, manage the team, define goals, deliver results and be responsible for them.


Position Location - This role is available in the following locations: Remote, San Mateo, CA, Columbus, OH, and Austin, TX.


Time Zone Requirements - This team operates on the East/West Coast time zones.


Travel Requirements - This team has regular onsite collaboration sessions. These occur a few days per quarter at various locations in the US. If you need to travel to make these meetups, Upstart will cover all travel related expenses.


How you’ll make an impact:


  • You’ll lead the way in building tooling and automation to monitor the health of our infrastructure and create a productive environment for other engineers.
  • You’ll have wide latitude in technology options and define our strategy for technology operations risk mitigation, which includes disaster planning and incident management and on-call procedures, and will report directly to our Director of Engineering Programs.
  • You’ll own and develop our SRE tactics, observability tools and services, directly engage with the rest of the DevOps, Data and Software Engineering teams to improve uptime, reliability and resiliency of our application stack.
  • You’ll define key performance indicators (KPI) and implement processes and initiatives across the engineering organization that raise the bar of operational excellence and foster a culture of continuous improvement.


What we’re looking for:
  • 10+ years of experience in a leadership role focused on operational excellence, process improvement or business transformation
  • Experience with AWS and Kubernetes/Openshift
  • Comfortable working in high-security / high-compliance environments, such as finance or healthcare
  • Experience with Ruby programming
  • Preferred qualifications:
  • Ability to define high-level strategy for operations monitoring and risk mitigation and drive its implementation
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Experience in Fintech
  • Minimum requirements:
  • 7+ years as a technical people manager
  • Good knowledge of fundamental SRE guidelines and strategies
  • Proven ability to hire and manage a team of engineers, plan on-call rotation, implement incident and change management workflows

At Upstart, your base pay is one part of your total compensation package. The anticipated base salary for this position is expected to be within the below range. Your actual base pay will depend on your geographic location–with our “digital first” philosophy, Upstart uses compensation regions that vary depending on location. Individual pay is also determined by job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. $200,700—$295,000 USD
