Job Description

Director of Engineering

Reporting to the Regional Vice President and General Manager, the Director of Engineering is responsible for planning, directing, controlling and coordinating the activities of the Engineering department. These include the maintenance of all electrical and mechanical equipment used in air-conditioning, heating refrigeration, water supply, building facilities and power center of the entire Hotel. He/she is also responsible for the preventative maintenance of all Hotel equipment, appliances and furniture.

What you will be doing:

  • Supervises and monitors the performance and daily activities of the maintenance staff, assigns jobs, work tickets and prioritize work load to ensure optimum productivity and timely response.
  • Monitors daily labor logs for completeness and accuracy of data to track and maintain labor costs.
  • Provides the necessary technical information for repair, maintenance, operation, modification, replacement and new construction activities to ensure that all jobs are being done correctly.
  • Provides on-the-job supervision and training.
  • Develop and implement preventive maintenance systems and procedures and repairs for all machines, equipment, apparatus and fixtures used in the Hotel in a timely fashion.
  • Plans and conducts monthly staff communication meetings to increase staff awareness, conduct monthly training and discuss quality standards.
  • Participates in the Total Quality Management process and supports staff participation in order to foster continuous improvement throughout the hotel.
  • Supervise and monitor the performance and daily activities of the maintenance team
  • Be available for emergencies both on & off duty
  • Complete new hire and annual performance evaluations for your team
  • Effective scheduling, vacation planning and department productivity in regards to the budget
  • Manages Engineering Department’s labor cost and expense lines and stays within approved amounts.
  • Coordinate and schedule outside contractors
  • Determine the cost of new and replacement equipment, furniture, building materials, new construction and building alterations and manages the capital budget.
  • Work closely with other departments on the consideration of new and replacement equipment, furniture, building materials, new construction and building alterations.
  • Advises and confers with management on the effective and conservative use of heat, light and power, as well as the proper application of repair and maintenance plans and procedures.
  • Effective and timely interaction with all Hotel departments
  • Effective communications and follow up with the Housekeeping department related to guest room and public area care.
  • Assist with hiring, disciplinary actions, counseling and performance management ito develop a highly skilled and motivated staff.
  • Develop positive working relationship with outside vendors
  • Prepare department operational budget
  • Performs routine and emergency assignments in accordance with established hotel procedures to provide guests and employee safety.
  • Enhance and monitor departmental environmental initiatives and recycling programs
  • Makes periodic and routine inspection tours of the hotel and monitors compliance with government requirements to ensure all applicable laws are followed.
  • Maintain positive working relationships with all departments and colleagues
  • Consistently provides on-the-job supervision and training

Your experience and skills include:

  • Excellent time management and organizational skills; Ability to handle multiple tasks at one time.
  • Some computer knowledge, Microsoft, Excel etc.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • 1-3 years as a Director of Engineering experience in a hotel or similar environment required
  • Ability to lead and direct others
  • Technical knowledge of electrical, HVAC, refrigeration, plumbing and all areas of engineering.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • University degree or College diploma in related field or equivalent combination of education and experience
