Job Description

Under the direction of theNVP, Advocacy & Government Relations, theDirector, Advocacyis a key position tolead and implement the strategy, messaging,and execution of comprehensive advocacy to supportGovernment Relationspriorities of the Boys & Girls Clubsof America. This position is responsible for building on components of this strategyincludingexpanding organizational capacity for Club and Youth advocacy,providing direct support around in-person and virtualadvocacyevents, leading and implementing targeted advocacy campaigns and strategies at the Federal and State levels while providing direct grassroots support. This position is cross-functional and will work across internal departments and the entire GovernmentRelations team as well as local Boys & Girls Clubs, State Alliances and Club youth advocates in active pursuit of goals to meet the needs of local Boys & Girls Clubs and to address issues facing America’s youth.


Responsibilities

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Develop and implement advocacy plans and strategies in partnership with the GR team, including BGCA’s movement Advocacy plan, Federal policy plans, State Alliance, and local club Advocacy plans. Proactively identify and react to changes in policy areas for youth development to support our top-tier policy issues.

• Develop and disseminate appropriate, timely, and quality communications from the GR Department to Clubs, Stakeholders, BGCA staff, and volunteer leadership to support our funding and policy goals.

• Engage and support local Boys & Girls Club organizations to collaborate with the GR Team in advocacy efforts, including advocacy campaigns, events, trainings and elected official engagement to demonstrate Club impact and value in districts and states.

• Oversee development of appropriate internal and external Advocacy collaterals. Work with GR staff & appropriate BGCA departments to collaborate on the development of these materials and to identify opportunities for internal collaboration.

• Execute Club Advocacy Recognition Program and Advocacy Awards for Clubs including monitoring program metrics.

• Inform and support Movement-wide Advocacy and GR training strategy.

• Lead and provide project management consultation for impactful annual advocacy events throughout the movement including State Legislative Days, State YOY’s with Legislative components, Summit for America’s Youth, National Days of Advocacy, etc. utilizing established best practices involving planning, implementation, event execution, relationship management, and outcome measurement.

• Lead Advocate recruitment and digital advocacy strategy at Federal and state levels by driving online engagement through targeted BGCA digital and social advocacy campaigns on key policies. 

• Lead GR Thought Leadership strategy to elevate impact and visibility of our identified GR goals.

• Inform, develop, and implement a scalable comprehensive Youth Advocacy strategy for BGCA and Clubs.

• Continue to build out the TLC (Think Learn Create Change) initiative along with BGCA subject matter experts which may include creation of further TLC materials, trainings, Youth Advocacy toolkit or MyFuture.net module.

• Develop pipeline and cultivate partners and stakeholder to align with BGCA’s youth advocacy or civic engagement efforts.


Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

• Bachelor’s Degree or education/experience equivalency preferred.

• Minimum seven plus years experience working in the Government Relations field including experience with Boys & Girls Clubs, associations, non-profits, think tanks, or foundations engaged in advocacy at the Federal and/or State levels.

• Demonstrated successful experience in building community collaborations, engaging in advocacy activities, and working in partnership with coalitions to advance government relations goals.

• Working knowledge of Government policy processes.

• Experience utilizing grassroots, grasstops, digital and media advocacy tactics and innovative strategies.

• Extremely self-motivated individual with the ability to take initiative and work as a team player; provide strategy development and prioritize work while working in tandem with others in Government Relations. 

• Demonstrated high standards of ethics and integrity; self-starter with the ability to anticipate department needs and respond to those needs; builds trusting long-term relationships with individuals and organizations; creates and communicates tactical objectives and action plans;

• High energy, innovative, motivated, confident, and creative;

• Ability to work for prolonged periods at high levels of activity, managing multiple tasks with varying deadlines; ability to exchange, clearly and concisely, ideas and facts, both verbal and written. Superior interpersonal abilities with public speaking capabilities. 

• Ability to get along with diverse personalities, tactful, mature, flexible. Good reasoning abilities and sound judgment. 

• Should be familiar with the latest digital collaboration methods, communication, analytics, using these tools to forward the work of the organization.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

Supervise direct reports. May monitor and coordinate the work of temporary employees and student interns

ENVIRONMENTAL & WORKING CONDITIONS

• Normal internal working environment. 

• Up to 20% travel. 

• The individual selected for this position must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and be able to navigate areas of the country by using a map or other direction methods.
