Full Salary Range: $83,100 - $169,500/yr. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience; the budget for the position; and the application of fair, equitable, and consistent pay practices at the University.

Work Location: Student Resource Building

Brief Summary of Job Duties

Responsible for the department's mission, services, strategic plans, mission continuity, goals and priorities. Ensures alignment of department's services to division and campus missions, resources and partnership needs. Works with staff to ensure student accommodation requests are processed and services are delivered in compliance with ADA. Works with academic leadership on options for accommodation options and compliance, training, IT Tools in and out of the classroom and communication needs. Works with faculty partners, and the ADA compliance Officer to resolve student concerns and grievances. Responsible for personnel matters for a diverse staff. Responsible for the overall management of a $2.5 million departmental budget including student fee and other fund types. Works with campus initiatives to support campus's diversity, equity and inclusion, and accreditation and retention efforts. Develops internal controls to mitigate risk and ensure compliance, business continuity, and academic integrity.

Required Qualifications

  • MA Degree in Education, Counseling or related field preferred, or five years of related leadership experience in a higher education setting.
  • .Knowledge of American Disabilities Act and demonstrated analytical experience to interpret policy regarding academic accommodations for students with disabilities in a higher education setting.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Interpersonal, written and verbal communication and presentation skills to communicate effectively to diverse audiences, and to interact sensitively about the intersectional needs of students with disabilities.

Job Functions/Percentage of Time/Duties

30% Department Leadership

  • Ensures department compliance with UC, state and federal ADA policies/laws, and serves as a campus resource about ADA accommodations.
  • Works with the management team to provide guidance and direction to DSP staff in setting goals and objectives for all program services and partnerships.
  • Implements and maintains a comprehensive department assessment plan to include strategic planning; learning/operational outcomes, data management and analysis, evidence-based decision-making and alignment of practice to the division and university’s mission. Evaluates department, and uses assessment data to determine student and faculty communication and service/partnership needs, and present/future budget allocations.
  • Responsible for management-level decision making regarding departmental personnel, policies, and resources; ensures sound fiscal management. Manages and determines computing needs for DSP. Responsible for communication and negotiation of all current and future department space.
  • Ensures staff are trained to deliver consistent documentation analysis and accommodation options for ADA eligibility and compliance. Develops internal controls to mitigate risk, and ensure compliance, business continuity and academic integrity.
  • Responsible for department services and processing of academic accommodations for students with disabilities. Work with staff, campus and UC partners to create an inclusive environment. Oversees the attainment of the department’s mission, services, mission continuity, goals and priorities. Ensures that programs, technical resources and administrative operations are congruent with departmental objectives, values and pedagogy.


30% Academic Services Management

  • Works with campus initiatives to support campus’s diversity, equity and inclusion, and accreditation and retention efforts as needed.
  • Assists the Assistant Vice Chancellor with functional areas related to academic support services. Participates in the SASS Directors group and works as part of a team to ensure cluster mission continuity, collaboration, integration of IT and strategic planning.
  • Ensures the campus has a grievance process for ADA-related academic services. Works with partners on resolution and response.
  • Serves on campus and UC committees regarding students with disabilities. Participates in work groups in and out of the UC; provides disability accommodation expertise, and interprets policy and regulations, and formulates guidelines. Maintains liaison relationships with various government or community agencies, as needed.
  • Works with UC colleagues and Academic Senate faculty partners on facilitating new and existing accommodation needs. Works with academic leadership and the campus ADA Compliance officer, as needed, on communication, options for compliance and training.
  • Ensures operational support for the campus’s Testing Center and negotiates agreements about staffing support, and integration of duties and IT functionality across both areas.
  • Provides consultation to other campus entities about academic accommodations and when needed for campus building and renovation projects, universal design, telecommunications, adaptive computer equipment, etc.


20% Student Services

  • Provides training and support services to a variety of student service programs, such as disability awareness workshops for faculty and community members.
  • Utilizing advanced advising, communication and problems solving skills, provides guidance and support to students concerning disabilities affecting academic performance. Advise and refer in areas such as personal, financial, academic, housing adjustment and other intersections with disability-related needs.
  • Identifies critical situations involving significant personal and emotional distress and immediately interfaces with appropriate campus professional units in accordance with interdepartmental policies and procedures.
  • Recognizes potential issues addressed by other departments in the Division of Student Affairs and/or other campus services, makes and facilitates referrals to those units by cultivating student receptivity, and by orienting staff to the procedures and processes of other departments. Works with campus mental health providers and academic partners to provide expert consultation, respond to students in distress, and ensure holistic support across functional areas.
  • Consult and work with faculty, staff, psychiatrists, physicians, academic deans, disability compliance officer and administrative officers on specific and general problems, needs, and concerns of students with disabilities. Serves as point person for students referred to DSP on academic issues by faculty and staff.
  • Works with staff to ensure student accommodation requests are processed and services are delivered per compliance with ADA. Reviews medical documentation to determine and verify eligibility for academic support services for students with permanent physical disabilities. Consults with academic partners on accommodation options, IT Tools in and out of the classroom and communication needs. Works with the ADA compliance Officer and faculty partners to resolve student concerns and grievances.
  • Works with DSP staff to process documents as needed, and to respond to complex requests requiring cross-department collaboration or time sensitivity.


20% Department Management

Human Resources

  • Convenes staff meetings as a forum for training, conveying information about campus resources, policies and emerging issues, and to ensure communication and morale. Identifies resources to provide professional development for staff
  • Responsible for all personnel matters for 13+ staff FTE and a large number of student staff. Hires, trains, supervises, and evaluates staff in accordance with job responsibilities, and department goals and objectives. Ensures up to date training of specialists who analyze medical and/or other documentation to determine accommodations for ADA eligibility and compliance. Keeps abreast of ADA policy changes and new accommodations. Convenes the team to case requests and ensure consistency in documentation review.

Financial

  • Negotiates budget & recharge rates for partners to include CARE, Title IX, departments and other contracting parties.
  • Responsible for internal controls to mitigate risk. Ensures stewardship and compliance in use of various funds and accounts.
  • Develops and submits a one-time funding request to the Student Fee Advisory Committee.
  • Oversees and provides reports on Mandatory Student Fee income of approximately $250,000. Responsible for reaffirmation campaigns for Associated Student and/or Campus Elections Commission fee referendum funds.
  • Responsible for the overall management of a $2.5 million departmental budget with multiple fund accounts.
  • Responsible for working with the Student Affairs’ Grants and Development to seek new funding sources through private donations and grant opportunities. Also works with development staff to coordinate annual stewardship reports and to cultivate new potential donors as opportunities arise.
  • Prepares budgetary reports for SASS AVC and VCSA Director of Resource Planning, and other funding agencies.

Informational Technology

  • Responsible for the administration and management of software programs that process documents for accommodations and communication with academic and student service partners. Uses advanced knowledge of federal ADA regulations and campus policies to identify IT tools, needs and functionality and makes recommendations to ensure IT tools are updated for current compliance, accommodation offerings and partnership needs.
  • Oversees the department software tool and works with the IT team to integrate new services and functionality as needed.
  • Works with campus IT to implement and oversee potential vendor software contracts or campus IT tools, and ensure integration with DSP’s department software program. Works with campus information systems partners to ensure real time data integration of current students. Ensures risk mitigation for the security and privacy of data.
  • Ensures work and communication flow are accurate for students and academic partners, and creates measures to ensure business continuity.
