This Director position will lead AZ & NV project development and execution efforts for AES Clean Energy’s solar and standalone storage efforts. The person will lead all project development efforts for the AZ & NV regions and manage a team of supporting developers. Key activities include identifying optimal locations for solar and standalone storage projects, land acquisition, project permitting, coordinating site studies and diligence, managing the interconnection process, handling project development budgets, due diligence and assistance with project acquisitions and ensuring projects successfully reach construction commencement.
This position will reside within AES Clean Energy’s project development group and will work in close collaboration with the company’s new products team. The position can be remote based or use one of our various office locations including: Louisville, CO; Salt Lake City, UT; San Francisco, CA or San Diego, CA. The role requires the ability to handle multiple project portfolios, attention to detail and travel as needed. The successful candidate will work on a cross functional team with new product development, origination, commercial, legal, finance, engineering, construction, and outside consultants, landowners, customers, project collaborators and utility companies. The position requires project management knowledge and expertise with solar and storage technologies.
Key Responsibilities:
- Coordinate closely with the broader cross-functional teams
- Participate in project financings answering relevant diligence questions and providing required documents
- Manage contract obligations in key project documents
- Lead and manage all aspects of project development from site origination or acquisition through to construction commencement
- Work with internal and external engineering teams as they progress engineering and design.
- Handoff projects once fully developed and permitted to Construction Management
- Work with internal construction management team on contractor selection process
- Coordinate with construction management team on securing ministerial permits
- Lead project discretionary permitting including permit strategy, tracking permit efforts, working with local AHJs, presenting at permit hearings
- Originate and develop a pipeline of solar and standalone storage projects in the AZ & NV markets
- Apply critical thinking needed to communicate and influence employees at all levels regarding project risks, opportunities, and recommended action
- Develop and manage project development schedules and budgets
- Coordinate for delivery of site and environmental studies, surveys and diligence reports
- Hands-on team leader and project developer
- Lead a growing team of project developers(s)
- Lead project meetings with internal and external collaborators
- Coordinate additional resources or outside consultants/contractors as well as managing and meeting expenses throughout project development
- Provide support and analysis for Business Development pipeline reporting
Skills and Qualifications:
- Willingness and ability to travel 10-20% on average but more as required by projects
- Excellent oral and written communication skills are required including public speaking and/or platform skills for executive management presentations
- Comfortable managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
- Extensive knowledge of renewable energy project development, utilities, interconnection, permitting, contracting
- Self-starter, very self-reliant and capable of operating with minimum supervision
- Extensive knowledge of renewable energy and energy storage technologies
- Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines
- Experience using CRM systems and developing metrics
- Experienced people leader and manager of both direct reports and cross-functional project team subject matter authorities
- At least 8-10 years of project development experience in renewable energy development (AZ and/or NV experience preferred)
- Undergraduate degree, preferably in renewable energy, logistics, finance, engineering, project/construction management or equivalent
