Job Description
Applied Materials is the leader in materials engineering solutions used to produce virtually every new chip and advanced display in the world. Our expertise in modifying materials at atomic levels and on an industrial scale helps our customers – who make smartphones, supercomputers, virtual reality headsets, autonomous vehicles and more – transform their ideas into reality.

The technologies we create are the foundational building blocks of the future. Our systems make semiconductor devices, called chips—"the brains" of the electronics used in almost every aspect of our lives. The promise of new and exciting applications, transforming industries such as consumer electronics, transportation, communications, healthcare, and super computing/AI, are enabled by advances in semiconductor and display technology.

While virtually every nationality, culture, and background are currently represented within Applied Materials, we strive for a more robust Culture of Inclusion (COI) and diversity. Leveraging our COI vision helps drive innovation, build organizational capabilities, create equal opportunities for everyone and achieve our company’s definition of Winning.

Our innovations Make Possible® a Better Future. If you’re looking for the next step in your future, consider Applied Materials. With the data explosion and new investment in semiconductors, it’s an exciting place to be.

Role

Applied Materials expects over the next five years to have the most exciting and active project pipeline in its history. The Global Workplace and Infrastructure (GWI) team at Applied Materials is responsible for all facilities, from acquisition through operation to disposition. The Design and Construction COE is a newly established function within GWI to ensure successful delivery of over $500m in construction projects worldwide annually.

The Director of Design and Construction COE will be responsible to lead a central team of resources that provide a range of support critical for efficient, consistent and successful project delivery. Project types include advanced semiconductor R&D labs, large scale manufacturing, logistics infrastructure, and offices. The position is based in Santa Clara and will report to the Managing Director, Strategic Infrastructure.

The role will be responsible to hire and build a team of approximately three direct reports. This team will perform any and all activities required by projects. As a regionally organized function, the GWI team has resources at many of our locations globally. While those regional teams are primarily accountable for the entire life-cycle of their facilities (lease/buy, design, construct, and operate), the experience and bandwidth available does not always align to the project complexity or peak workloads that the construction projects demand. The COE team will be responsible to compliment the local teams to complete the experience and bandwidth needed for a particular project’s success.

The COE will effectively partner with regional teams to deliver major construction projects globally. The manner in which the team will provide support will vary. This will range from participating as an active member of the onsite project team to remote participation to hiring a third party as an owner’s representative. The COE team members are expected to be willing to travel up to 50% and virtually support all global timezones.

In addition to direct project delivery, the COE will identify and deliver foundational elements of a global design and construction function that will speed delivery and drive consistency, where appropriate. Examples may include standardizing key project delivery processes such as cost estimating and tracking, scopes of consultants (AE, PM, GC, QS), project team structure, contract templates, reporting metrics, establish a pre-qualified supply chain, etc.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review site planning and design for new building construction, lab and cleanroom installs, value engineering, build code compliance, and building permitting.
  • Manage a team of construction project managers. Facilitate their professional development and establish exciting career paths for growth.
  • Participate in the due diligence required to support securing full funding approval for major projects.
  • The Director of Design and Construction COE will:
  • Leverage our global scale and purchasing power to reduce overall costs on goods and services.
  • Ensure that the prescribed quality and financial control measures are implemented and maintained throughout the life of the project.
  • Support regional teams to provide clear and frequent project updates to internal stakeholders on scope, schedule, budget and risks.
  • Develop, in partnership with the regions, a resource plan for all major construction projects on the roadmap.
  • Lead the development of the project pipeline (cost and schedule) as part of the Annual Operating Plan process.
  • Develop standard project delivery processes. Evolve them through the collection and incorporation of lessons learned. Train regional teams as needed.
  • Monitor project performance through a regular project review rhythm to enable near real-time knowledge of project status, risks, and help needed.
  • Participate in the selection, contract negotiations, and onboarding of key consultants, particularly AE, GC/CM.
  • Establish regional partnerships with architects, engineers, consultants, and contractors. Monitor and report the performance those firms.

The Ideal Candidate will have the Following:

  • Experience managing global, strategic, large scale, and complex projects with a proven track record of delivering impact.
  • Experience in the semiconductor or similarly technically complex industry.
  • Experience selecting, developing and managing design and construction-related service providers.
  • Bachelor Degree or higher in an Engineering or Construction Management discipline.
  • Experience with wide range of facility types across the entire project lifecycle (Entitlement, Planning, Design and Build).
  • Experience delivering projects in multiple geographies, particularly US, APAC and India.
  • Experience with contract development, administration, and claims management.
  • Experience managing virtual teams and dealing with a wide-range of international cultures.
  • Strong executive presence with an ability to communicate with and effectively influence senior leaders.
  • Passion to challenge the status quo in pursuit of material performance improvement.

To Succeed in this Role Requires:

  • Drive to discover new ways to solve problems and influence others to commit to change.
  • Demonstrated ability to direct/coach teams and provide feedback.
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to bring strategic insights to an operation that drives improved performance in complex environments.
  • Ability to partner effectively with demanding and highly technical business leaders and internal customers.

Position requires understanding of Applied Materials global Standards of Business Conduct and compliance with these standards at all times. This includes demonstrating the highest level of ethical conduct reflecting Applied Materials' core values.
