The Dean of Justice, Public Safety and Law Studies serves as the key liaison and College spokesperson for the School and provides strong leadership for Justice, Public Safety and Law Studies through strategic planning, program development, review and revision, resource development, innovation, faculty development and cross-disciplinary collaboration. The Dean has a strong external focus which includes establishing and fostering connections with external entities related to Justice, Public Safety and Law Studies. The position advances strategic enrollment, student success, college completion, job placement and transfer. This is a Professional Exempt Contractual (PEC) position for which an annual contract reflecting the base salary within the fiscal year (July 1st to June 30th) will be issued after ratification by Miami Dade College’s District Board of Trustees.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Pursues and establishes new relationships with business and industry, educational institutions, governmental agencies and potential donors that result in resource support for workforce development programs
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Creates and secures partnerships that meet or exceed target goals related to increasing number of partnerships, paid student internships, grant awards and other resources for Justice, Public Safety and Law Studies
- Serves as MDC’s primary liaison and steers the School Advisory Committee by presenting business research data and making recommendations to recruit community business member participants thus ensuring that programs respond to community needs
- Leads the strategic advancement of the unit’s internal and external reporting structures, including annual effectiveness reports, discipline action plans, accreditation reports, grant reports and strategic enrollment management plans, in consultation with the members of the College’s executive leadership team to facilitate alignment with college-wide priorities
- Represents the college and serves as the key spokesperson for Justice, Public Safety and Law Studies to the external community, including but not limited to, national, international, regional and local entities
- Collaborates with the Deans of the Faculty, cross-disciplinary innovation, program development, review, and close-out (as appropriate) and ensures program relevancy
- Provides leadership and supervises Program Coordinators (non-faculty), Community of Interest (COI) Coordinators, grant funded personnel, and other staff as appropriate
- Develops classroom resources for use by adjunct faculty, in conjunction with the Deans of the Faculty, Department Chairs, and full-time faculty
- Initiates strategic planning Justice, Public Safety and Law Studies and establishes key performance indicators for success that meet or exceed targets and ensures alignment with college-wide priorities
- Actively collaborates with Campus Presidents, Deans of the Faculty and Deans of Faculty and Student Services to develop and implement strategic enrollment management initiatives that meet or exceed performance targets for student recruitment, enrollment, completion, and job placement within the program
- Collaborates with the Deans of the Faculty to ensure availability of professional development for full-time and adjunct faculty in Justice, Public Safety and Law Studies so they can remain current in both industry and pedagogical trends
Minimum Requirements
- Knowledge and understanding of College organization, goals and objectives, and policies and procedures
- Knowledge and skill in effective communication utilizing public relations principles and practices
- Knowledge of college educational philosophy and top management administrative practices and procedures
- Strong leadership skills that promote dedication, collegiality, creativity, innovation and growth
- Strategic planning skills to effect change in a complex multi-campus environment
- Ability to work effectively in a multi-ethnic/multi-cultural environment with students, faculty and staff
- Knowledge of technological systems as they apply to instructional, administrative, and workplace needs
- Knowledge of workforce and academic trends in justice, public safety and law studies
- Knowledge of regional and program-specific accreditation requirements, processes and criteria
- All degrees must be from a regionally accredited institution.
- Skill in employee development and performance management
- Doctorate degree in Criminal Justice, Public Safety or related discipline and six (6) years of demonstrated progressive administrative and management experience to include large complex budgets and federal grants in an instructional environment; or Master’s degree in Criminal Justice, Public Safety or related discipline and seven (7) years of demonstrated progressive administrative and management experience to include large complex budgets and federal grants in an instructional environment
- Ability to think, reason, and make sound judgments on how responsibilities are completed in compliance with college standards and guidelines
- Ability to develop and interpret financial data/plans and manage resources
Essential Position
- This function/position has been designated as “essential.” This means that when the College is faced with an institutional emergency, employees in such positions may be required to remain at their work location or to report to work to protect, recover and continue operations at the College
