Job Summary:
JOB SUMMARY
We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Computational Engineer to join our group at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. As a Computational Engineer, you will play a crucial role in developing, building, and calibrating agent-based models of HIV infectious diseases. Your expertise in C++ programming, Python scripting, and data analysis will be vital for conducting advanced simulations, analyzing complex datasets, and implementing machine learning algorithms. This position offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research in computational epidemiology and make a significant impact on public health.

RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Model Development and Implementation:
o Collaborate with the research team to develop and implement agent-based models of infectious diseases using C++.
o Design and optimize simulation algorithms to accurately capture disease dynamics, transmission mechanisms, and population interactions.
o Ensure efficient code structure and performance optimization to handle large-scale simulations.
2. Calibration and Validation:
o Apply statistical methods and sensitivity analysis techniques to calibrate and validate the agent-based models using real-world epidemiological data.
o Collaborate with epidemiologists and domain experts to incorporate relevant disease parameters and validate model outputs against empirical observations.
o Identify and resolve discrepancies between model predictions and observed data through iterative refinement.
3. Data Analysis and Visualization:
o Utilize Python scripting and data analysis libraries (e.g., pandas, numpy) to preprocess, clean, and analyze epidemiological data.
o Develop visualizations to effectively communicate model outputs, trends, and insights to both technical and non-technical audiences.
o Extract meaningful information from complex datasets, identify patterns, and contribute to the interpretation of research findings.
4. Documentation and Collaboration:
o Document code, algorithms, and methodologies to ensure reproducibility and facilitate knowledge sharing within the research group.
o Collaborate effectively with interdisciplinary team members, including epidemiologists, statisticians, and public health experts.
o Contribute to research publications, conference presentations, and grant proposals.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Knowledge of machine learning algorithms and frameworks, such as scikit-learn or TensorFlow, and their application to real-world problems.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary research environment.
  • Familiarity with data analysis techniques, statistical modeling, and visualization tools.
  • A master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Computational Biology, Epidemiology, or a related field. A Ph.D. is a plus.
  • Strong programming skills in Python, with experience in scripting, data manipulation, and scientific libraries (e.g., pandas, numpy).
  • Experience in agent-based modeling, infectious disease modeling, or epidemiological research is highly desirable.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities, analytical thinking, and attention to detail.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Proficiency in C++ programming, including knowledge of the latest version and best practices for efficient and scalable code.
