Job Description

The Position

Summary

The Contracts Manager will report into the Research Contracts Group (RCG) within Research in Genentech Research and Early Development (gRED) and will be the single point of contact for assigned Research departments, responsible for executing a variety of agreements and managing the life cycle of such agreements. The Contracts Manager will work closely with Research scientists, subject matter experts, Legal, Finance, Compliance, and senior management, as well as external technology transfer offices and contracts teams, academic scientists and companies.

Job Responsibilities

  • Data entry in the relevant databases.
  • Handle execution and post-execution processing of agreements, including recording agreements in database, milestone payments, filing agreements with Records, compiling tax forms, initiating the PO process and submitting invoices.
  • Draft and negotiate master service agreements, material transfer agreements, collaboration agreements, sponsored research agreements, license agreements, laboratory services agreements, confidential disclosure agreements and various other agreements, including but not limited to software and AI related agreements, using department templates, playbooks and guidance documents, to meet the scientific and business needs of assigned departments in the Research organization.
  • Directly support several Research departments, and act as the single point of contact for internal and external stakeholders, for all contractual matters for such departments. Resolve all contractual issues with direction, as needed, from manager, Legal and/or department liaison.
  • Produce applicable data and statistical reporting (including budget reporting) for contracts to assigned Research departments.
  • Reviewing fully executed agreements to determine effective/expirations dates, identifying and tracking milestones, reporting or other contractual obligations under such agreements and ensuring compliance with such obligations;
  • Ensure that payment and other obligations under executed agreements are handled appropriately; work with Vendor Finance and Procurement to submit license and other fees for processing in a timely manner.
  • Ensure that agreements comply with all applicable Research, Genentech, and Roche policies and procedures, with input from manager, Legal, Compliance, or business, as needed.
  • Independently draft and negotiate the aforementioned agreements ranging from low to moderately high complexity and work with manager, as needed, on non-routine agreements or high complexity agreements.
  • General alliance management responsibilities are required, including:

Job Requirements

  • At least 2 years of contracts management experience in a pharmaceutical/biotech, software and/or university setting.
  • Must leverage critical thinking skills to be able to independently and creatively solve problems.
  • Detail oriented, team player attitude, high work ethic and reliability.
  • General understanding of data protection laws and/or software terms is a plus.
  • Demonstrated experience working with databases and enterprise business systems.
  • Strong time management, prioritization and organizational skills.
  • Must be able to effectively communicate with scientists, attorneys, contract negotiators, and industry executives.
  • Proficient with standard office suites such as Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, etc.), Google Applications (Mail, Calendar, Drive, Meet, etc.) and SLACK.
  • Working understanding of legal terminology and has experience drafting and negotiating contracts.
  • Knowledge of business matters in the pharmaceutical/biotech industry, including software and artificial intelligence (AI) related contracts preferred.
  • Working understanding of legal issues, including but not limited to, intellectual property, indemnity, privacy and confidentiality issues.
  • Minimum 5 years relevant work experience with a Bachelor’s Degree, 3 years with an MBA or 2 years with a PhD or JD. We will actively consider equivalent work experience or certification(s) in place of a degree; however, a BA, BS, MBA or JD degree in a scientific, business, or legal discipline is preferred.
  • Ability to work independently as a self-starter, influence stakeholders through effective communication and handle multiple priorities in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.

Work Environment/Physical Demands/Safety Considerations

  • Lifting up to 15 lbs may be required
  • Ability to read and respond to at least 40 emails a day.
  • Standard work requires significant amount of keying and moussing. Must be able to accommodate extended periods of computer usage to meet business needs.
  • Ability to stand or sit for at least 6 hours each day.

The Contracts Manager is aligned with the Project Manager role within gRED. The Project Manager title will be used for internal-facing audiences in our HR system.

Relocation benefits are not available for this job posting.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of South San Francisco, CA is $92,800 to $172,300. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and Company performance. This position also qualifies for the benefits detailed at the link provided below.
