Job Description

SUMMARY

The Communications Manager manages internal and external communications for Children’s Institute (CII) by elevating and amplifying the organization’s public facing message to clients, donors, press, and volunteers, as well as creating and implementing strategies that will inform and enhance the employee culture across the agency. Contributes to developing CII’s messaging strategy and writes copy to support and promote CII’s internal and external facing initiatives, paying close attention to audiences and consistent tone and messaging.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  1. Reports to the Director of Marketing & Communications and collaborates across departments on internal communications, creates and implements internal communication strategies for CII regarding key company initiatives, programs, and values as well as positioning and strategy for overall message, tone and voice.
  2. Develops content for the CEO and other executive leadership communications across channels, including intranet, email marketing, presentations, and
  3. Works with the Director of Marketing & Communications, relevant departments and external agency on key messages about CII’s program, services and initiatives for website, blog, press releases, and social
  4. Writes copy for long from (blogs and newsletters), short form (invitations, etc.) and website incorporating established messaging and ability to translate complex ideas and programs into simple messages for various audiences.
  5. Creates and manages overall internal and external communications calendar for CII. Writes and deploys all communications to employees including executive communications, departmental updates, blog, website, social
  6. Reviews/edits all social posts and writes posts as needed.
  7. Maintains and populates content for all communication channels with CII-related information including company updates, employee spotlights, business initiatives, event promotions, etc.
  8. Oversees and coordinates CII’s Virtual Town Hall including scheduling, email communications, developing agendas, presentations and overseeing the technical production. Contributes regular blogs to CII’s website; attends events and conducts interviews as needed to generate content.
  9. Builds and maintains relationships with press/media and pitches stories on an ongoing basis initiative that support employee engagement strategies and the communities in which CII
  10. Ensures staff email list is regularly updated for communications and imports/manages

ADDITIONAL DUTIES

  1. Maintains working knowledge of current writing, editing, publications, and marketing practices and trends in the nonprofit sector through reading, research, participation in seminars and other educational opportunities and personal contacts/memberships in the field; recommends new/updated communications strategies as appropriate to CII.
  2. Monitors relevant news/stories on an ongoing basis and shares with staff/CII’s Board of Trustees on a weekly basis.
  3. Creates, maintains, communicates, and enforces CII style guide for consistent messaging and style across the agency, both internally and
  4. Develops and maintains related informational files such as media contacts, clipping database, photo and historical
  5. Other duties and special projects as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Is responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of the direct reports.
  • Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws.  Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring and training employees; planning, assigning and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
  • This job supervises 1 staff

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • 7+ years of relevant communications experience.
  • Working knowledge of Mailchimp and Wordpress (or comparable software/platforms) and at least two years of experience managing
  • Bachelor's degree in English, Communications or Journalism from a four-year university
  • 2+ years of managerial, supervisory experience.
  • Basic Photoshop and InDesign skills preferred.
  • Experience working with press/media and a successful track record of pitching and placing stories.
  • Strong writing skills and knowledge of communications best practices.
  • Social justice/non-profit experience preferred, along with working knowledge of child welfare, education and/or mental health issues.
  • Team player who can juggle multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS

  • Spanish / English bilingual strongly preferred.
  • Punctual and dependable attendance.
  • Understands CII’s basic philosophy and participates fully in carrying out its mission.
  • Possesses a valid driver's license and state-required auto insurance.
  • Project management and strong editing skills required.
  • Sensitivity to service population’s cultural and socioeconomic characteristics.
  • Maintains patient privacy, including protecting the confidentiality, safeguarding the integrity and availability, and limiting the use and disclosure of patient Protected Health Information (PHI) to authorized individuals and entities.
  • Free from alcohol and drug abuse.
  • Ability to handle confidential information.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • This position may require some travel.
  • Participates in, conducts, and sustains performance quality improvement activities according to designated role and responsibilities
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

COMPENSATION:

  • The salary range  for this role is $80,000-$90,000 per year.
  • In accordance with CA law, the expected pay range for this CA position is posted with this position.  The actual compensation will be determined based on experience and other factors permitted by law.
