Under the supervision of a Program Administrator in charge of Elementary School, Middle School, and/or High School, the Child Welfare and Attendance Liaison (CWAL) will assist in developing and implementing intervention plans which promote positive relationships between parents, community representatives, and school personnel which would improve the behavior and attendance of students. The CWAL acts as a link between parents and community groups, teachers, and other employees of the San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) for the purpose of providing information and support for students. This is an itinerant position based in the Pupil Personnel Services Department that meets regularly with school site Assistant Principals, Attendance Clerks, Head Counselors, and School Counselors to determine appropriate support to increase student attendance and acts as a liaison between the students, their families, and the school.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Utilizes knowledge appropriate to satisfy the duties listed above, including but not limited to familiarity with goals of San Francisco Unified School District’s truancy effort, Pupil Services, and the Stay-in-School Coalition as well as the District's organization, rules and procedures, and familiarity with programs and services in the school district and in the community that support students and their families. Must have demonstrated skills in working with students involved in the Juvenile Justice and/or Dependency systems and have familiarity with city and community resources for at-risk children/youth in San Francisco.
Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with staff, City agencies, and community in a multi-ethnic educational environment; develop and maintain good working relationships with school staffs, parents, City agencies, and the general public; facilitate discussions among diverse groups of people, provide case management assistance and assist with information and referral services; ability to interact effectively with diverse people and communities; prepare accurate, concise data and materials; ability to write case summaries/documents for referrals to School Attendance Review Board (SARB) and District Attorney meetings.
Minimum Qualifications- At least four years of progressively responsible experience in communityrelations or public relations (or an equivalent combination of training, experience and education);
- Valid Driver’s license
- Two (2) years of college-level coursework in education, health education,outdoor education, social sciences, social work or a closely related field. (30 semester units or 45 quarter units equal one year);
- Strong Spanish or Chinese Language skills
- Experience working with student/youth support programs and services
- 4-6 years working with youth and/or their families
- Social work internship or case management experience
- College level education or equivalent work experience
