The primary role of the Chief of Staff is to assist Abiomed’s President and Executive Team with making time, information, and decision-making more effective.


To accomplish this mission, the Chief of Staff will focus on the following tasks:


  • Synthesize and summarize correspondence, financial reports, academic journals, personnel reports, etc. – create executive summaries and brief the President as needed on specific issues and projects
  • Serve as an air traffic controller for the President and senior leaders of Abiomed – maintains awareness of the company’s operations to effectively prioritize time and resources
  • Lead efforts to build and/or edit company newsletters, reports, quarterly financial reports, speeches, and presentations
  • Serve as an integrator connecting work streams that otherwise remain siloed – knows the organization and how sub-tasks fit into Abiomed’s strategic and tactical goals
  • Develop and implement project management system to guide and maintain awareness along multiple lines of effort
  • Coordinate with President’s Executive Assistants to refine and optimize scheduling through effective prioritization – balancing internal and external requirements to include meetings, travel, presentations, etc.
  • Maintain pressure on due-outs that the President has requested from subordinate leaders
  • Assist with written correspondence to patients, doctors, employees, and senior leaders
  • Serve as a sensor within the organization to communicate key internal concerns to the President
  • Work hand in hand with Abiomed’s Human Resources team to inform President on new hires, talent gaps, and potential opportunities to recruit high-level talent to join the team
  • Maintain involvement with Abiomed’s Competitive Intelligence Division to communicate external threats, inform President on current actions, and advise strategic responses to threats
  • Serve as a representative of the President to external agencies as needed (town of Danvers, state of Massachusetts, philanthropy efforts, etc.)
  • Assist with enhancing Employee Management System and leadership development programs at Abiomed


Skills And Qualifications


  • Desire to grow into a senior leader within Abiomed and Johnson & Johnson MedTech
  • Acumen, finesse, and flexibility to manage complex situations and multiple responsibilities, balancing long term timelines with urgency of immediate demands
  • MBA ( not a must ) or similar degree-10+ years in an executive management role
  • Experience in planning and leading strategic initiatives
  • Proven experience organizing and directing multiple teams and departments
  • Ability to be located physically in Danvers, MA
  • Ability to communicate at all levels of the organization – confident, humble, and empathetic – humility to do the small things and confidence to manage strategic-level work
  • Excellent communicator and listener
  • Understanding of Abiomed 2.0 objectives, culture, and relationships (internal and external)
