Description of Job


As History Colorado strives to meet broad strategic goals in service of Colorado’s communities, we are seeking an exceptional and inclusive leader to contribute proactive, strategic, and visionary leadership in building a resilient organization where people can thrive in their work. To support equity, inclusion, and belonging in the workplace, the Chief of People & Culture (CoPC) will be responsible for developing strategies, processes, and programs that support our teams in alignment with our Anti-Racism Grounding Virtues. Reporting to the CEO, the CoPC is a new position of the Executive Leadership Team and will actively participate as a thought leader in a wide range of strategic planning and internal initiatives, including the creation and implementation of organizational strategies that are rooted and informed by a deep commitment to racial equity and antiracism. This includes thought-leadership, communications and planning, along with the development and implementation of processes such as onboarding and integration, conflict resolution, performance management and success, continuous feedback, and on-going training and professional development. This position will also supervise staff working on recruiting and retention, benefits, orientation, compliance, and other HR operations. It is essential that the CoPC has a strong personal and professional commitment to racial equity, a collaborative spirit, and readiness to lead. This is a full-time, exempt position.


Development and implementation of forward-moving inclusive organizational culture


  • Implementing processes and programs that ensure History Colorado’s inclusion and equity values are in action internally, in all areas of the organization.
  • Interfacing with efforts to promote Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion across state institutions.
  • Leading development and implementation of a strategic framework to foster a culture of belonging, inclusion, and excellence across History Colorado.
  • Regularly solicit input and collect, analyze and share metrics to keep the pulse of the organizational culture and employee satisfaction.
  • Serving as primary author and leader in the production of the “Words Matter Guide” resource book to allow all staff an accessible and digestible format to learn about best language practices for working at History Colorado
  • Convening key Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion trainings for All Hands, the Board, Board Committees, and leadership
  • Develop and implement Equity, Inclusion, and Diversity performance indicators as a key aspect of assessing organizational health.
  • Serving as an internal consultant for departments and individual staff needing support, resources and/or managing issues related to diversity, equity and inclusion
  • Supporting supervisors and staff across the organization to deepen the work of equity and inclusion, provide ongoing training, and support team leaders in advancing antiracism in the workplace.


Leadership of all aspects of History Colorado Human Resources


  • Serving as a resource to team leaders and staff members in developing strong working relationships and resolving conflict.
  • Leading the talent management function of the organization, encompassing recruitment, hiring, and succession planning for all staff across History Colorado, at multiple work sites and including seasonal/temporary workforce.
  • Setting a vision for team member onboarding and creating a unified onboarding experience for all new team members aligned to our mission, vision, culture and values.
  • Ensuring that History Colorado is in compliance with all laws and requirements of being an agency of the State of Colorado.
  • Providing processes and structures for performance evaluation, compensation assessment and planning, and benefits management that are in alignment with organizational strategy and objectives.
  • Supervising the Volunteer Engagement team, integrating volunteers as an important component of History Colorado’s workforce
  • Implementing strategies that support retention of staff, helping to create a workplace where people stay and thrive.
  • Leading the development and implementation of clear policies and practices, and providing training as needed, that foster stability, clarity and confidence.
  • Demonstrating skill, respect, and honesty in addressing matters of equity, race, and bias in talent decision-making.


Leadership in organization-wide strategic planning and implementation


  • Assuring that strategic decisions balance the mission of the organization and the care for Colorado communities with the resources and needs of the staff
  • Identifying long-term needs and trends that may impact the organization’s strategic vision and/or the workforce.
  • Ensuring that the best practices for building belonging, equity and inclusion are part of the organization-wide strategic plan and implementation


Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions Of Employment & Appeal Rights


  • A visionary and human-centered approach to the work of History Colorado’s and its workforce
  • Managerial experience with paid and unpaid staff
  • Strong project management and facilitation skills guiding internal community and staff through complex situations
  • At least 10 years of experience in a leadership role within a non-profit, cultural, or state agency, including experience in managing Human Resources and developing processes and programs to support internal culture
  • Direct and sustained experience leading, implementing, and evaluating Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion strategy at the institutional level, and working with leadership development and staff development on issues of EDI
  • Commitment and proven track record of inclusive and equity based approaches to the work
  • Relevant four-year degree or equivalent experience in Human Resources, business administration, public or nonprofit administration or a related field
  • Exceptional communication, leadership and organizing skills
  • Sophisticated understanding of their own intersectional identity and demonstrated ability to generate trust and connection across lines of difference
