Vanderbilt University seeks an experienced and strategic leader for the position of Chief Business Officer (CBO) at the Vanderbilt University School of Engineering (VUSE). Reporting to the university’s Assistant Vice Chancellor for Finance and working directly with the dean of VUSE, the Chief Business Officer provides overall leadership and support of the financial and administrative operations of the School of Engineering.

Founded in 1886, the Vanderbilt University School of Engineering is internationally recognized for the superior quality of its research and education programs in selected fields of engineering. The school’s combination of innovative and interdisciplinary research, commitment to undergraduate and graduate education, and active collaboration with the distinguished Vanderbilt University Medical Center creates an invigorating atmosphere for faculty members, research staff, and graduate and undergraduate students. The school currently enrolls 1,473 undergraduate and 830 graduate and professional students across all degree programs. The school is supported by over 200 talented staff, who deftly support and manage the myriad operations and complex research and administrative processes across VUSE.

The Chief Business Officer is responsible for advising the Dean regarding strategic financial, human resource, and operational topics. The CBO supports the school’s finance function, including daily operations, developing monthly financial projections, and preparing annual and long-range operating and capital budgets. In addition, the CBO oversees local human resources activities. In order to carry out these wide-ranging activities, the CBO will manage a talented team and interface with a wide spectrum of partners across the institution, including regular interactions with senior-level faculty and administrators and with central services such as Vanderbilt University Information Technology, Facilities, Campus Planning, Procurement & Payment Services, and Human Resources.

The CBO is an effective leader, natural collaborator, and skilled communicator who is capable of building trusting relationships across VUSE and the university as a whole. The ideal candidate will also have a strategic, decision-enabling mindset and keen financial acumen that will allow them to effectively advise and partner with the Dean, VUSE leadership, the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Finance, and other key stakeholders. The CBO will have experience with financial analysis, reporting, human resources management, operational oversight aligned under university fiscal guidelines, and strategic financial planning, preferably in a higher education environment, as well as knowledge and experience in operational areas.
