The Office of Career Planning and Professional Development seeks a part-time Career Advisor (Non-teaching Adjunct, Level 2-4) to advise PhD and Master’s students and postdoctoral fellows. This position is up to 225 hours for the fall semester, 225 hours for the spring semester, and 175 hours for the summer semester, for approximately 10 hours per week.This is a hybrid position, the incumbent will work in the office and remotely.
This position reports to the Director of the Office of Career Planning and Professional Development.
Duties include but are not limited to:
- Write content for website blog.
- Review academic and non-academic job-search materials, conduct mock interviews, provide input on job offer negotiation and career decision making.
- Organize panels of speakers on faculty careers and other career options for PhDs.
- Develop and present workshops on job search functions such as resume/CV/cover letter writing, interviewing, negotiating job offers as well as how to talk about one’s research and one’s teaching.
- Present to departments and student groups.
- Conducts formal and informal career assessments.
- Provide career advice for PhD and Master’s students and postdoctoral fellows of the Graduate Center, CUNY on career planning, job search strategy, and on a variety of careers including faculty careers.
- Participates in weekly team meetings.
- Meet with students in person, by phone, and online through GoToMeeting.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's Degree required.
OTHER QUALIFICATIONS
- Flexible in adapting to new systems and responsibilities.
- Ability to juggle multiple priorities.
- Collaborative style and the ability to take initiative is important.
- Excellent counseling skills, with the ability to work with graduate students and postdocs who are applying to a variety of careers.
- A Master’s Degree or more and 2 years to 3 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience. A PhD degree is desirable.
- Outstanding presentation and writing skills.
- Ability to assimilate and retain large volumes of information on career fields.
- Database management and web site management skills strongly preferred.
- Knowledge of specific fields such as academic careers, science careers, and the expanded job market for PhDs, a plus.
- Ability to organize and implement programs, workshops and special events. Ability to juggle multiple priorities.
COMPENSATION
Houlry pay range is $59/hr (Level 2) up to $71.07/hr (Level 4)and will be determined by the candidate’s level of education and experience.
