Job purpose

The Independent is looking for breaking news reporters to work from our New York HQ or remotely as part of our growing US team.

Reporting to our Executive Editor for News and West Coast bureau chief you will help break stories from across the US in subject areas from crime to politics, climate and culture.

Experience in a fast-paced newsroom is a must. You will need to demonstrate great news sense and the skills necessary to develop a moving story under pressure via a liveblog, news story or in a longer form feature.

We want someone who is willing to work hard and can spot stories ahead of our rivals and knows what to do to turn a breaking story into an exclusive or investigation.

Skills

• You must have a broad understanding of current events in the US and a strong interest in news and politics
• A good grasp of media law is expected, with experience using resources like Pacer and Nexis to develop stories
• Experience working in a digital news environment is a must

We offer staff a flexible working situation with an expectation of three days a week in person in New York or fully remote for employees outside the city. Recruits will need to live in New York, California, Colorado or Washington DC to qualify.
