Position Summary Information

Summary
The Associate Executive Director of Economic Development will dual report: Administratively to the Cal Poly Corporation CEO and functionally to the university President. The incumbent will be responsible for the following:

  • Creation of the regional and local economic development strategy in collaboration with campus administrative and academic partners.
  • Collaborate with campus administrative, academic and research leadership to integrate and align, to the extent possible, campus strategic priorities with regional economic development strategy.
  • Provide leadership and coordination for the Cal Poly Local Economic Development Committee (LEDC)
  • Collaborate and partner with regional leadership in education, government, industry, and non-profits in the development of regional economic development strategy
  • Promote and secure opportunities beneficial to Cal Poly academic, research, student and business interests in regional economic development activities
  • Collaborate with campus administrative, academic and research leadership to integrate and align, to the extent possible, campus strategic priorities with regional economic development strategy
  • Represent the University and/or President on state and local community economic development opportunities in collaboration with University leadership
  • Develop partnerships with industry in collaboration with the Vice President for Research
  • Obtain funding for economic development projects for the benefit of the university and surrounding community
  • Attract companies to locate to the San Luis Obispo region

The successful candidate will be an experienced leader with knowledge of the role of higher education institutions in innovation and entrepreneurship; regional economic development; talent and workforce development; and social,
cultural, and community advancement. The Associate Executive Director will work with university leadership, Dean’s, faculty and staff, government and community relations, state agencies, local governments, other similar organizations to develop and lead initiatives to improve and increase interaction with industry and community members in order to grow economic development for Cal Poly and the greater San Luis Obispo community.
The successful candidate will not only discharge the required duties but is also expected to establish collaborative and transparent relationships between CPC, the University, and its partners.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Advanced leadership, supervisory, and management skills to successfully operate in a complex, environment and interact with a diverse clientele including corporate managers, federal, state and local government representatives, senior academic administrators, and Cal Poly faculty and staff. Ability to use tact and diplomacy to effectively handle a broad range of high level and sensitive interpersonal situations, and to respond appropriately to conflicts and problems
  • Expert interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy conducive to building and developing effective relationships with potential collaborators, administrators, staff, faculty and other members of the campus community
  • Goal-oriented thinker who has the ability to set clear priorities among multiple tasks and stay focus on project benchmarks and deadlines. .
  • Demonstrable critical thinking and problem-solving skills to analyze situations, define problems, identify concerns, develop and implement solutions. Excellence in judgment and decision-making skills
  • Demonstrated proficiency with conceptualization, design, and implementation of community and economic development projects
  • Ability to assess operational conditions, adjusting as necessary to optimize effectiveness and improve operations. Adaptability in meeting short and long-term strategic goals of the Institution
  • Ability to prioritize, plan, organize, and meet timelines
  • Ability to maintain flexibility and adaptability to work collaboratively in a fast-changing environment
  • Ability to represent the campus’s interests and expert negotiation skills with the ability to achieve consensus, optimize the University’s objectives, and ensure that effective and cooperative working relationships are maintained. Possess a high degree of integrity, ethics and dedication to the mission of the University
  • Minimum of 7 years of experience in development, planning, project management, finance, or related fields.
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year university in public, personnel, business administration, or related field and five years substantial experience in strategic planning, economic development and/or community development.
  • Preferred: Experience in a non-profit, university or public sector environment.
  • A background check is required for all regular benefited positions
  • The person holding this position is considered a ‘mandated reporter’ under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment
  • Excellent interpersonal and leadership skills, including the demonstrated ability to motivate and influence individuals at all levels and negotiate agreements and partnerships.
  • Demonstrated leadership and management experience to integrate academic and administrative activities.

  • An understanding of and commitment to shared governance.

Physical Demands
  • Must be capable of safely operating a vehicle and possess a valid California motor vehicle operator’s license and automobile insurance.

Typical Essential Functions
  • Develops and leads the regional and local economic development plans to attract companies and organizations to San Luis Obispo generating jobs for the community.
  • Manages large-scale economic development and workforce development plans and projects.
  • Analyzes existing economic situations relative to business attraction and expansion; review modern techniques for business attraction and retention and negotiated and resolves sensitive and controversial issues monitors program performance and provides reporting to various entities.
  • Represents Cal Poly at appropriate civic, cultural, charitable, business and community activities as well as serves on boards, commissions, committees and organizations related to the areas that are critical to the University’s goals and interest.
  • Coordinates campus activities related to economic development.
  • Collaborates with appropriate campus partners on initiatives to create a talent mobilization effort to recruit companies interested in developing partnerships or internships for students year-round.
  • Develops and leads initiatives and programs to improve and increase interaction with industry and community members to the mutual gain of the university and the economy.
  • Serves as a resource and offers direction for economic development and workforce development for state agencies, local government, economic development organizations, and other similar entities.
  • Communicates through meetings, webinars, reports, and other formats about economic development and workforce trends, research findings, and characteristics of different communities.
  • As appropriate, serves as the Cal Poly liaison with other higher education associations and other national organizations that influence institutions of higher education, their public and private partners, and public policies and federal law affecting university economic and community engagement. Serves as a liaison with local, regional, and national economic development organizations and organizations aligned with the University
