Assistant Professor Of Practice (Applied Woodwinds, Music History And Literature)

The SIU School of Music is seeking an Assistant Professor of Practice (Applied Woodwinds, Music History and Literature). This is a term, non-tenure track, full-time, nine-month appointment effective August 16, 2023. This position is contingent on available funding.

Teach individual lessons to undergraduate and graduate flute and woodwind students. Supervise flute and other woodwind student recitals. Lead weekly studio class. Co-teach Woodwind Methods for Music Education students. Recruit, develop and retain a flute studio and assist other woodwind studios in these matters. Teach courses in the Music History and Literature curriculum relevant to candidate’s experience. Instruct graduate music students in research and bibliography methods.

Completed doctorate in music at time of appointment. Demonstrated ability to motivate students and work collegially. Demonstrated ability to recruit and retain woodwind students. Experience teaching at the University level. Experience as instructor of Music History courses.

DMA in woodwinds or flute performance preferred. Flute as primary instrument with advanced performance experience on at least one other woodwind. Elevated profile as a woodwind performer with an interest in a wide repertoire. Experience teaching many historical periods and topics in music. Experience with research and bibliography methods.
