The Muskingum University Department of English invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor, beginning the fall semester of 2023. We are eager to welcome a new colleague who will support the core curriculum by teaching lower-level courses in writing and courses in literature that emphasize themes related to gender studies, race, and ethnicity. Deeper instruction in literature through upper-level courses, especially those pertaining to the literature of race and ethnicity, will also be part of the teaching load.
Student advising will provide opportunities for additional student development, while productive scholarship is expected to attain tenure. Working with departmental colleagues and the Muskingum University Impact Center, the successful candidate will contribute to applied learning experiences for students, such as embedding career-connected skills and experiences into courses and development of job shadowing and internships. Consultation with the Office of Cultural Engagement and Inclusion and with other departments will link literary and creative arts to a commitment to diversity and inclusivity.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Demonstrated teaching effectiveness and potential for productive scholarship.
- A terminal degree in English or a related field is required; ABD candidates will be considered.
- Evidence of strong and respectful working relationships that will facilitate collaboration with other academic departments and offices.
Muskingum is a comprehensive university with a strong liberal arts tradition, located just seventy miles east of Columbus, Ohio, in the village of New Concord. The university’s total undergraduate, graduate, and adult-learner student population is approximately 2,500.

Appointment to this position is conditional upon successful completion of a background check through the University’s background check agency.
The university actively seeks out and welcomes faculty and staff who are committed to excellence in teaching and student learning, thrive in a collaborative environment of scholars, embrace experiential learning, consider the engagement of diverse communities in the educational experience, and desire to mentor a multicultural student population.
