CAMPUS SPECIFIC INFORMATION

The Ph.D. Program in Art History at the Graduate Center seeks an Assistant or Associate-level Professor with a publication record at the intersection of Art History of the nineteenth or twentieth century and post-colonial/decolonial studies, in any geographic region. Additional research areas of particular interest include diaspora studies and/or critical race theory. Preference will be given to scholars whose research connects withanother department(e.g., Theatre and Performance, English, History) or certificate program (e.g., Africana Studies, American Studies, Critical Theory, Film Studies, Women’s and Gender Studies). We strongly encourage members from historically underrepresented communities, inclusive of all women, to apply.

The Graduate Center, CUNY, is the focal point for advanced teaching and research at The City University of New York (CUNY), the nation's largest urban public university. With over 35 doctoral and master's programs of the highest caliber, the Graduate Center fosters pioneering research and scholarship in the arts and sciences and prepares students for careers in universities and the private, non-profit, and government sectors. The Graduate Center's commitment to research and scholarship for the public good is exemplified by its more than 30 centers, institutes, and initiatives. The Graduate Center (GC) benefits from highly ambitious and diverse students and alumni—who, in turn, teach hundreds of thousands of undergraduates every year. The Graduate Center enhances New York City's intellectual and cultural life through its public programs.

The Ph.D. Program in Art History is a major center for intellectual exchange and graduate training in the heart of New York City. Founded in 1971, the GC’s Art History program was the first in the U.S. to focus on training theoretically astute and historically grounded scholars of American, Modern, and Contemporary Art, including Photography, which at the time was unique. The department has produced pioneering scholars who have gone on to dominate the field, holding influential positions in academia and beyond. The Ph.D. Program in Art History continues to be one of the GC’s flagship departments, not least because of the close relationships between its faculty and art world professionals, and the fact that every museum in New York City employs at least one of our alumni.

The successful candidate will be committed to program and institution buildling and leadership. The position will be available for the Fall 2023 semester.

The majority of classes and meetings are in-person or hybrid, so candidates will be required to provide proof of being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 upon commencing employment.Exemption (medical or religious) requests to this requirement will be considered in accordance with applicable law. Being fully vaccinated is defined for this purpose as being at least two weeks past their final dose of an authorized COVID-19 vaccine regimen.
