About Binghamton University
Binghamton University is a world-class institution that unites more than 130 broadly interdisciplinary educational programs with some of the most vibrant research in the nation. Our unique character - shaped by outstanding academics, facilities and community life - promotes extraordinary student success.
Binghamton merges rigorous academics, distinguished faculty and state-of-the-art facilities to engage and challenge its 18,000 students. The high-achieving Binghamton student body also represents a great diversity of life experiences, from first-generation college-goers to international students. Beyond their talent, these classmates share a desire to shape the future through technology, insight, intellectual exploration and community service.

The Thomas J. Watson College of Engineering and Applied Science at Binghamton University invites applications for a faculty position at the associate professor level, with a planned start date of Fall 2023. We invite prominent leaders in the interdisciplinary fields of artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), data science and healthcare systems and solutions. This position is supported by the State University of New York (SUNY) Empire Innovation Program (EIP), a key initiative of the State of New York. EIP professors are recognized leaders in their fields with international reputation for outstanding research, established track records of scholarly achievements, high-impact publications and significant external funding. Faculty hired in this position will have the title, "SUNY Empire Innovation Associate Professor" in "Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning for Health Sciences, Systems, and Outcomes".
We seek candidates who can conduct and lead research in the fundamental AI/ML and healthcare applications thereof.
Technology areas of interest include machine learning, computer vision, natural language processing, imaging and perception, cognitive and robotic science, computational learning theory, large-scale and hyper-parameter optimization, statistical machine learning, data mining and complex systems. Application areas of interest across the healthcare spectrum include health and wellness monitoring, disease detection and diagnosis, disease and behavior intervention modeling, medical imaging, predictive and risk analytics, treatment planning, care coordination, precision and personalized medicine, population health and lifestyle management and medical knowledge extraction and representation.
Also, of interest are applications of AI/ML in health systems engineering, healthcare delivery optimization, and health operations management as well as bioprocess modeling and integration, tissue biofabrication, and robotic engineering of bioprocesses. Other key areas include affective computing, emotional AI, and trustworthy AI in the context of health and wellness.
The successful candidate will be expected to present a clear research vision and a strategic plan for securing research funding. They will be an integral part of the AI-Healthcare cluster and join a team of exceptional researchers from across Watson working in this domain, including 2 recent EIP hires at the full professor level.
They may also establish fruitful cross-disciplinary collaborations with faculty in other schools within the University including the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, as well as with Watson's strategic research partners including Upstate Medical University and United Health Services.
The EIP hire will have a direct role in the growth of the University's education programs related to artificial intelligence, especially in the context of healthcare applications and systems, and will serve as a mentor for junior faculty and aspiring researchers.
Binghamton University currently enrolls over 18,000 students and Watson College has over 3,100 students across its five departments (Biomedical Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Systems Science and Industrial Engineering) and two specialized programs (Materials Science and Engineering, Engineering Design Division).
The engineering school maintains close collaborations with other colleges within the University including the Harpur College of Arts and Sciences, Decker College of Nursing and Health Sciences, and the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences in research and scholarship. We are committed to building a diverse and inclusive teaching, research, and working environment. Applicants who share our goal, and in particular, underrepresented minorities, women, persons with disabilities and veterans are strongly encouraged to apply.
Binghamton University has a long-standing reputation for academic excellence in undergraduate and graduate education.
Categorized as a highest research activity (R1) institution in the Carnegie Classification system, the University offers range of master's and doctoral programs in the liberal arts, sciences, engineering, nursing, and other professional programs.
A premier research university, Binghamton is one of four SUNY university centers and currently generates over $48M in annual research expenditures. The National Academies, Fulbright, Ford, and Guggenheim have recognized the scholarship of the campus' faculty, and the University manages grants from the National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation, Department of Education, Department of Defense, Environmental Protection Agency, U.S. Department of Agriculture, New York State, and industry partners.
Binghamton University's unique program for convergence research, theTransdisciplinary Areas of Excellence (http://www.binghamton.edu/tae/) (TAE), brings together faculty from across the campus to address problems of national relevance and societal importance. Of the six TAEs, two, namely, the Health Sciences TAE and the Data Sciences TAE, are closely aligned with the focus areas of this position and the EIP hire with expertise into AI, ML, and health sciences will have the opportunity to actively participate in and contribute to research efforts under these TAEs. The University also has a strong industry funded portfolio of AI research focused on AI tools and applications in healthcare (see, for example,https://www.binghamton.edu/s3ip/;https://www.binghamton.edu/watson/research/wise.html;https://www.binghamton.edu/research/innovation/incubators).
Binghamton University's new Health Sciences Campus in Johnson City, NY includes the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences and the Decker College of Nursing and Health Sciences.
By actively partnering with local and regional hospitals and academic medical centers and by increasing research investments, the University aims to become a leader in medical and pharmaceutical research.
Two such partnerships include the new Brain and Body Imaging Center with United Health Services, and the research partnership with Upstate Medical University.
