The Center for Global Engagement, (CGE), is hiring an Assistant Director for Global Partnership Development and Impact to join a team of dedicated professionals in our Global Research Office. CGE is comprised of seven units (Asia Engagement, Communications, English Language Institute, Global Research, the International House, International Student and Scholar Services, and Programs Abroad) who are responsible for working throughout campus, across Tennessee and around the world to provide enriching and diverse international experiences for faculty, students and scholars.


The University of Tennessee, Knoxville (UTK) is Tennessee’s flagship university and premier public research institution. We are an R-1 land-grant university with approximately 30,000 students, 9500 faculty and staff, 11 colleges, and over 300 degree programs. There are more than 1600 international students and scholars on the UTK campus. The University is located on a 580-acre campus in the city of Knoxville in eastern Tennessee, near the Great Smoky Mountains. The University of Tennessee Knoxville campus is seeking candidates who have the ability to contribute in meaningful ways to the diversity and intercultural goals of the University.


The City of Knoxville is a hidden gem surrounded by eight gorgeous lakes, with a beautiful and walkable downtown, a diverse music scene including internationally recognized festivals, active neighborhoods, unique restaurants, and a robust offering of diverse cultural and outdoor activities. UTK is located within easy driving distance to the Great Smoky Mountains, Atlanta, Nashville, Asheville, Charlotte, Louisville, and Cincinnati. It is only a day’s drive to Memphis, Chicago, and Washington D.C. Knoxville and the surrounding counties have a population of more than 850,000 people.


Position Summary

The Assistant Director (AD) for Global Partnership Development and Impact helps cultivate and manage partnerships that serve the entire University of Tennessee Knoxville (UTK) community. The AD will facilitate the development of agreements between the university and its international partners, as well as contribute to the implementation of global initiatives and projects. The AD is key to shaping and supporting UTK’s global vision, building and supporting global relationships and advancing the UTK’s visibility and reputation on the world stage.


Position Responsibilities

  • Partnership Security and Compliance
o Keep abreast of US Federal Agency guidance on research security, regulatory or compliance that can impact global partnerships. Work with CGE leadership to inform ORIED, Colleges, faculty and to share best practices.
o Works closely with the AD for Health, Safety and Security to vet prospective partners, communicate risk to ORIED, Colleges and faculty.
o Regularly works with Export Control and the AD for Health, Safety, and Security, and to monitor emerging threats with partners and their geographic location.
o Stays attuned to the dynamic requirements and contexts surrounding research security in a global environment.
o Identify Global opportunities and potential risks for the University’s international collaborations.

  • Outreach to Faculty and Staff
o Works collaboratively with academic and administrative units at the University and international counterparts, to advance the University’s global vision through the cultivation, enhancement, and maintenance of global partnerships. The priority area of work is building partnerships focused on research and faculty global engagement.
o Collaborates with Center for Global Engagement leadership, faculty champions, and other university staff to negotiate and manage partnership agreements with globally based institutions.
o Creates and disseminates periodic reports highlighting the impact of these partnerships and their value add to faculty and the university more broadly.
o Leads and coordinates events and programs of international collaboration and help raise the University’s global profile and visibility.
o Conducts extensive research and generates briefing documents for related UT stakeholders on prospective partners. Visually map how new partners connect to existing networks and the work of faculty.

  • Strategy and Process Implementation
o Manages the development and implementation of a global partnership strategy that is integrated into the global vision and the UT strategic vision. In conducting this work, the AD contributes to both the pre-award processes of grant proposal development and support of strategic post-award activities. Collaborates with the Office of Research, Innovation, & Economic Development’s (ORIED) pre-award and post award team, to facilitate proposal development and implementation.
o Reviews newly proposed and renewing international partnerships to ensure their long-term viability and alignment with campus goals, while also vetting partnerships with key stakeholders and with regard to research security concerns. In doing so, facilitates the building, maintenance and management of UTK global partnerships and agreements, including memoranda of understanding, memoranda of agreement and dual degree agreements.
o Works with faculty and ORIED leadership to coordinate and track international travel of faculty and staff. Minimalize duplicating engagement with partners, understand what conferences and meetings faculty are attending, have knowledge of prospective donors that may attend, work to collect data that will inform the UTK strategy.
o Oversees the enhancement of the global partnership database and collects information from university stakeholders on global mobility, projects, grants, and publications, to create robust partner profiles that can be accessed through a reporting dashboard. Uses data to identify trends and evaluate the effectiveness of partnerships and international engagement.
o Coordinates efforts within Vice Provost of International Affairs and the Directors within the Center for Global Engagement to support global initiatives, data collection and reporting for the Center for Global Engagement.
o Evaluates processes within Global Research Office and the Center for Global Engagement with regards to partnership development and engagement; identifies problems and recommends changes and improvements.

  • Increase Visibility of the University and the Center for Global Engagement
o Serves on advisory boards, convenes working group meetings with members from the University, and international partner institutions, sets agendas, and conducts follow-ups.
o Manages the Center for Global Engagement's participation in global network initiatives and engages through professional networks around international partnerships.
o Evaluates processes with in the Global Research Office and the Center for Global Engagement with regards to partnership development and engagement; identifies problems and recommends changes and improvements.
o Oversees the coordination and logistics for activities related to global partnerships, including international partner visits, inventory of activities, and preparation of briefings.


Education and Experience
Required: Master’s degree and 1-2 years experience working in higher education, particularly in managing complex international educational and research partnerships. At least 5 years of professional experience coordinating programs, projects, and events. Grant proposal development and understanding of solicitations for external funding. Experience in positions that require a confident, highly engaged self-starter who takes initiative to navigate demanding workload, set and meet milestones and deadlines, build strong professional working relationships to increase effectiveness of collaborative efforts of team environments across multiple units.


Education and Experience Preferred: Juris Doctorate (JD) or LLM or extensive contract experience. Experience in global risk management in higher education, knowledge and experience in research security as it relates to partnership development. Building partnerships with industry partners. Knowledge of MoveOn platform. Grant budget development and maintenance. Global living, work, or study experience.

  • Knowledge of policies, regulations, and best practices related to international partnerships and contractual agreements.
  • Knowledge of donor agency (federal, foundation, and industry) grants processes
  • Experience coordinating global higher education programs.
  • Multilingual, ability to communicate proficiently in English and another language
  • Knowledge of the MoveOn software platform
