Laboratory/Studio Assistant - Culinary

Position Summary

Work directly with students to provide support with specialized equipment and/or technology.

Description of Duties

Supervise students in laboratory/studio experiences with faculty, supporting student acquisition of knowledge and skills of the course learning outcomes.

• Setup and breakdown of supplies for assigned laboratory.
• Proctor special exams as needed.
• Maintain records of student attendance and performance in lab and provide input to faculty as appropriate.
• Monitor the safe and appropriate use of lab/studio equipment and operate the equipment safely.
• Prepare requisitions for classes.
• Reinforce classroom instruction in the lab setting.
• Collaborate with faculty to schedule lab and/or simulation experiences.
• Facilitate student study groups and tutor students.
• Provide assistance to students related to culinary skills, equipment and technology.

Student Scheduling and recruitment

• Collect order forms for Awards Ceremony Chef Jackets and collect Community Service and Student Speaker paperwork. Provide support for the culinary department in preparation for the Culinary Arts Awards Ceremony.
• Work with incoming Monmouth County Vocational Culinary Arts Culinary students to register for fall classes.
• Work with new and current students to prepare or revise schedules.
• Maintain Internal Student Data Base of Culinary/ Pastry students.
• CEC Library: Check in & out library books. Maintain periodicals and trade magazines.
• Prepare excel spreadsheets of students eligible for Externship and Graduation.
• Maintain alumni database.
• CEC Tours Culinary Arts Department Primary Contact: Return phone calls and emails to perspective students and disseminate culinary information in an effort to recruit new students and grow the culinary arts department.
• Mailings: July/ January prepare, print, and mail Welcome/ Orientation letter for incoming students.
• Balance students in sections and assure the proper sequencing of classes is accomplished.
• Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
• Enter petitions in Colleague.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:

• Bachelor’s degree required in the field or related field or, in limited circumstances, the equivalent combination of education (Associates) and industry experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired.

Experience:

• Relevant work experience desirable.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

• Strong interpersonal and organizational skills with the proven ability to develop effective working relationships with students, staff and faculty.
• Computer literacy skills at an intermediate level including a proven ability to utilize and apply Microsoft Office Outlook, Word, Excel, and Power Point as well as specialized software programs and computer applications essential to the learning process. e.g. the College’s Learning Management System and ERP.
• Knowledge of information research strategies.
• Requires expertise in handling and treatment of harmful chemicals, substances, and/or equipment specific to the laboratory/studio in which the incumbent works.
• Ability to travel to other sites as needed.
• Proven ability to work effectively with students of varying ages, cultures, and knowledge base.
• Proven ability to communicate ideas, principles and concepts effectively in individual or small group settings.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $39,194.00 per year
