Job Description

JOB SUMMARY

The Assistant Controller plays a critical role in ensuring accurate and timely financial reporting, as well as contributing to process improvement efforts within the department. In addition to being a key liaison with both internal and external auditors, this individual helps to develop and implement financial controls, identify potential efficiencies and serves as a key resource on various accounting questions that arise. The ideal candidate should hold a CPA designation, possess a strong background in accounting, and demonstrate proficiency in managing teams and month-end close processes.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Identify areas for process improvement within the financial accounting group. Lead and participate in initiatives to streamline procedures and enhance efficiency, while still maintaining sound financial controls, system policies and procedures.
  • Prepare and review monthly account reconciliations on a timely basis, investigate variances and record any necessary resulting adjustments.
  • General Ledger and reporting software maintenance involving new accounts or cost center set up, resolving invalid account combinations, mapping changes, etc, and coordination with IT as needed.
  • Prepare and review monthly journal entries.
  • Responsible for healthcare claims tracking and processing of weekly claims detail from vendor. Also prepares monthly claim summary and IBNR analysis.
  • Coordinate and manage the annual financial statement audits. This includes planning, interim, and year-end fieldwork and ensuring that audit requests are delivered timely and accurately by the Company's internal team and answering auditor questions as they arise.
  • Ensure U.S. GAAP compliance by monitoring current developments in accounting practices and procedures. Review and analyze new guidance for potential impact on the Company financials and or its Parent and make recommendations for implementation of new pronouncements. Research and prepare accounting memos as needed.
  • Serve as co-administrator for cloud-based invoice and expense report processing software, including set up of new employee profiles, creation and update of approval workflows, maintenance of audit rules.
  • Serve as a resource for finance staff and across other departments with respect to expense and financial reporting as well as general accounting questions.

  • Responsible for lease accounting, including analysis of new leases, set up of schedules for ongoing accounting, ensure compliance with relevant US GAAP and IFRS literature as applicable, and footnote disclosures.
  • Provide guidance, training, and mentorship to four direct reports.
  • Effectively communicate and work with other departments across the organization and coordinate support as needed.
  • Support the Controller as needed, including ad hoc projects and one-off requests; serve as a go-to Finance team member for general questions and for the more complex or challenging projects and accounting issues.
  • Promote the Company's mission by learning and following the principles of the FIFCO USA Leadership Model.
  • Assist with the preparation of the annual and mid-year budgets for specific cost centers, benefits expense, and depreciation expense.
  • Prepare the monthly internal financial reporting packages as well as the annual external financial statements in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Responsible for freight accounting which includes preparation of the monthly accrual, use of queries and coordination with IT to load data to management reporting software, maintenance of the freight analysis file, and preparation of monthly reports.
  • Maintain advanced knowledge about key systems and applications and support the training of others on how to use these tools.



EDUCATION, SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

  • BS - Accounting or Finance
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel and Word Skills (use of pivot tables and VLookups a must!)
  • Excellent problem identification and solving skills with an enthusiastic attitude to managing and dealing with change.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must have strong verbal and written communication skills and excellent leadership capabilities
  • A mixture of both public and corporate accounting experience is preferred, Big 4 highly preferred, manufacturing experience is a plus
  • Must possess an effective management style, be capable of assessing situations, and be proactive as part of the management team. This person’s demeanor and bearing will garner respect of peers and subordinates alike."
  • Annual CPE course requirement
  • Ability to prioritize workload and juggle responsibilities in order to meet deadlines, satisfy requests, keep things moving, etc.
  • 5-6+ years of related work experience including supervisory experience
  • Certified Public Accountant
