The Regulatory Exam Lifecycle Management team (“RELM”) in Global Risk and Compliance is the center of expertise for U.S. regulatory exams and remediation of regulatory findings for the American Express enterprise.

RELM supports the end-to-end lifecycle of U.S. regulatory exams and remediation of regulatory findings – responsibilities that are central to the safety and soundness of American Express. We partner closely with all parts of the business – from senior decision makers to their teams –to support their interactions with regulators that oversee American Express National Bank (AENB) and American Express broadly, with a focus on responses to regulatory requests and walkthroughs. We continue that partnership when regulatory reviews result in findings (e.g., Matters Requiring Attention) or recommendations, supporting business units as they implement change.

This is a highly visible and strategic position with significant and regular interaction with senior leaders across the company, and includes navigating one of American Express’ most important relationships with our external examiners.

An analyst in RELM is primarily responsible for supporting regulatory exams across a portfolio of U.S. operations, as well as playing a critical role in supporting required transformation across all parts of the business. This Analyst position is located in New York City with hybrid in-office requirements (2 days a week in the office, or more as needed given regulatory interactions).

How will you make an impact in this role?

  • Seamlessly support regulatory exams from receipt of regulator First Day Letter through exam closure.
  • Support the execution of standard regulatory response and remediation processes, including formal remediation project tracking and reporting until closure of findings.
  • Provide guidance to internal partners and others on working with regulators.
  • Maintain open communications to ensure expectations are clear and needs are being met and that relevant information related to exams and remediation of findings is communicated to key partners as appropriate, in accordance with American Express standards.
  • Engage with the right parties to respond to requests made by examiners, and ensure that those responses are accurate, timely and complete.
  • Partner closely with:

o Business colleagues to: (1) ensure they have a thorough understanding of regulatory requests, (2) help anticipate regulatory needs, (3) prep business partners on an ongoing basis for regulatory interactions, (4) support responses to regulatory supervisory letters and (5) design and managing project remediation plans in partnership with leaders from across the enterprise.

o U.S. Regulatory Relations team within the General Counsel’s Organization to focus on regulatory reporting and engagement of our internal collaborators and regulators from the OCC, FRB, FDIC, CFPB, and state regulatory entities.

  • Support the preparation of documentation demonstrating successful completion of corrective actions for submission to the Internal Audit Group.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required, advanced degree a plus or equivalent work experience
  • Ability to communicate linkages across initiatives and disciplines without direct authority
  • Understanding/Experience of the supervisory processes of federal bank regulators
  • Strong written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills, and ability to effectively interact at all levels within the organization; especially with regards to sharing findings, best practices and key information pertaining to regulatory areas of focus
  • Highly collaborative, with ability to build and leverage relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Strong attention to detail, sense of follow-through and accountability, including the ability to handle multiple and concurrent examinations within a time-sensitive and fast paced environment
  • Strong Microsoft Office skills required
  • Project management experience, especially including cross-organizational coordination on large and complex projects a plus
  • Ability to engage with internal and external business partners, including senior leaders, to coordinate interactions with and responses to regulatory examiners
