Job Posting Description
The College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) at SIUE is seeking qualified applicants to fill a full-time Academic Advisor I or II. The Academic Advisor provides advisement services to CAS students and will approve the academic program of study for students. These positions will help students utilize appropriate university resources to foster academic and student success. Duties for the Academic Advisor include:
  • Assist students in progression toward the appropriate degree by identifying options to satisfy degree requirements, including recommendations for amendments or petitions to a student's academic program of study.
  • Disseminate accurate, current curricular information about the academic programs within the College of Arts and Sciences, including full knowledge of general education requirements and how students can fulfill the requirements, integrate major and minor requirements into general education requirements, transfer credit evaluation of new and continuing students, and degree audits for graduating students.
  • Perform administrative tasks which support advising duties and the progression of the student toward graduation such as maintain and manage appropriate academic records.
  • Provide awareness and knowledge of experiential opportunities (Internships, URCA, Study Abroad, etc.).
  • Offer academic guidance and assistance for students through short-term and long-term academic planning, course recommendations based on the academic program of study, and appropriate solutions for enhancing student academic progress.
Additionally, the Academic Advisor will aid with recruitment efforts and events in the College of Arts and Sciences (Preview SIUE, Transfer Visit Days, etc.) and meet with prospective students about the academic programs in the College of Arts and Sciences as well as provide proactive advising to support university retention initiatives. The selected candidate will support all of the educational policies of SIUE and the College of Arts and Sciences, and help students understand academic and university policies and procedures.
The professional responsibilities of this position may necessitate evening hours and occasional weekend hours. Other duties in support of the mission of the College of Arts and Sciences may be assigned from time to time.

Minimum Acceptable Qualifications
All applicants must have the following required qualifications:
A Master’s degree in an Arts & Sciences discipline, College Student Personnel, Higher Education, or closely related field;
Knowledge of student support services available to college students;
Provide excellent communication skills (interpersonal, oral, and written, as well as professionally communicate via electronic channels)
Demonstrate proficiency of administrative and organizational skills, and use of computer technology (Student Information Systems, Microsoft Office 365, etc.);
Ability to practice openness, respect, equity, and justice for person of different backgrounds, cultures, and perspectives.
Preferred Qualifications
Preferred applicants would have the following qualifications:
Previous experience as either a graduate assistant or full-time professional in a student services area of higher education, including but not limited to academic advising, admissions, career services, financial aid, residence life, etc.;
Knowledge of University policies and procedures;
Knowledge of or experience with academic disciplines within the College of Arts and Sciences;
Practical knowledge of college student development theory and academic advising theory;
Understand and adhere to the mission, vision, and strategic goals of the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA).
