Position Summary


The advisor will advise students applying for and enrolled in all School of Education off-campus B.S. Ed. degree programs in early childhood education (ECE), elementary education (ELED), special education (SPED), and organizational learning, innovation, and development (OLID).


The position will be located at SIU Carbondale, IL.


Duties And Responsibilities


  • Have working knowledge of all degree requirements and prerequisites needed for the degree programs assigned. --Responsible for "clearing" students for graduation.--
  • Perform other tasks as needed and/or assigned to enhance academic advisement services and support of the institutional mission.
  • Assist students in interpreting and understanding program curricula and prerequisites.
  • Comply with all mandatory training program requirements.
  • Participate in retention and recruitment initiatives and on- and off-campus orientation, advisement, and open house functions, and also professional development programs, advisement meetings, and technology workshops as assigned.
  • Effectively use all data platforms including, but not limited to, calendaring, electronic advising notations, reports, and other systems as required.
  • Serve as a liaison between all off-campus sites and personnel and on-campus faculty and staff, including Extended Campus (e.g. Student Success Coaches).
  • Maintain academic advising communications and records in compliance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
  • Coordinate receipt and distribution of course syllabus for articulation consideration.
  • Have working knowledge of University Core Curriculum requirements and how these requirements are aligned with the degree programs assigned.
  • Promote an inclusive environment in which all students are valued, supported, and respected.
  • Establish relationships with students that focus on individual interests, abilities, and values to facilitate career decision-making during the academic advisement process.
  • Make referrals to appropriate campus offices and/or student support programs in response to students' academic and/or personal needs.
  • Teach students how to use (a) Banner's self-registration system to build and manage class schedules, and (b) DegreeWorks to track progress toward degree completion and perform "what-if" scenarios to explore alternative degree options.
  • Assist students in developing an educational plan that relates to their choice of degree program.
  • Assist students in understanding the School of Education’s admission and degree requirements, registration process, and required administrative processes that must be completed by the student (e.g., math placement test, application for graduation).
  • This position will be expected to travel at least once a month to Scott AFB, Rend Lake Marketplace in Mt. Vernon, IL, and to University Center Lake County.
  • Use student information systems to view, interpret, and evaluate student records, examination scores, and transcripts to facilitate academic advisement and course registration, track progress towards degree, and process graduation clearances.


Minimum Qualifications


  • Applicants must also have experience using basic Microsoft Office programs, including Teams, as well as strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Master's degree; experience within a postsecondary environment; experience in academic advising, mentoring, counseling undergraduate students, or closely related experience.


Preferred Qualifications


  • Applicants with experience using student information systems such as Banner, EAB-Navigate or SalukiNet are preferred.
  • Additional preferred qualifications include experience with degree audit systems such as Degree Works; experience working collaboratively, cooperatively, and effectively with diverse populations.
