Job Description
Manages the Laboratory’s engagement with regional workforce development efforts; serves as the primary relationship manager for community colleges and other workforce development organizations; lead efforts to launch new programming leveraging Argonne’s technical tools and expertise; and develops training opportunities such as apprenticeships. Aligns programming to laboratory initiatives and the larger talent strategy, which includes the implementation of current programming and the development of new programming that address gaps identified through strategic planning.
Leads a team of individuals and manages all aspects of regional workforce development programming including identifying regional energy transition and non-R&D workforce needs; build partnerships and alliances with regional training and workforce providers (i.e. community colleges, unions, trade organizations); participate in existing ecosystems and develop new partnership ecosystems to address current and future workforce needs; and develop and track key metrics.
Develops and implements programming aligned to key regional workforce needs and/or technical gaps within existing training programs. Additionally, programming may include:
  • Co-Designing curriculum with community colleges to support new and emerging energy-focused jobs from the energy transition.
  • Implementing traineeship programs for technical jobs and/or high demand jobs such as health physics technician.
  • Launching apprenticeship programs associated with highly skilled and in demand technician roles.
Collaborates with Argonne scientific divisions and operational leaders to ensure programs are implemented with simplicity, efficiency, and transparency.
Brings together like-minded efforts around workforce development around the lab and serves a main point of contact for all workforce requests coming into the lab or need by scientific divisions. Leads the Lab’s workforce efforts around the clean energy transition.
Supports the Institutional Partnership Director’s efforts in building and nurturing relationships with key universities, colleges and other S&T consortiums and trade associations, by hosting convening opportunities aligned to strategic scientific initiatives and funding opportunities. Serves as program manager and liaison for a number of DOE program offices; and collaborates across the DOE complex through membership on the National Laboratory Education Director’s Workforce Development Subcommittee, and the Energy Storage Grand Challenge Initiative.
Manages an annual budget and contributes to Laboratory wide planning and reports; provides quarterly and end-of-year snapshots that showcase spending and program impacts. Supports large and small grant writing efforts for workforce development programming.
Position Requirements
  • Experience in building collaborations within and across institutions, including supporting collaborative research teams and leading faculty development programming.
  • Demonstrated experience of leading a high-functioning team in a dynamic environment.
  • Ability to build and maintain strong relationships with college and workforce ecosystem partners.
  • Ability to work in a dynamic team environment and manage multiple deadlines.
  • Demonstrated success managing and directing a team of professional staff including; evaluating employee performance; setting individual expectations and goals; creating an inclusive environment that promotes diversity; and focusing on professional development and teamwork.
  • Ability to leverage technology and social media to increase efficiency and effectiveness in collaboration, communication, and engagement across multiple audiences.
  • Ability to model Argonne’s Core Values: Impact, Safety, Respect, Integrity, and Teamwork.
  • Experience in program development including knowledge of recruiting strategies within diverse communities, program implementation and assessment, and management of participant issues.
  • Experience in Microsoft Office, cloud-based collaboration tools, online application tools, web platforms, and social media is desired.
  • Knowledge of best practices in adult learning is also preferred.
  • Knowledge of regional community college programs and experience in launching training programs in partnership with community colleges.
  • Strong project management skills and the ability to manage multiple stakeholders needs and come to a collective solution for the good of the laboratory or program.
  • Extensive experience in working with workforce development organizations and developing impactful programming that align to current regional workforce needs.
  • Excellent writing and communication skills.
  • Interpersonal, negotiation, and customer skills as well as the ability to establish a rapport with others.
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to details; highly responsive.
  • Ability to collaborate across all levels of an organization and drive change effectively.
