Job Description

Duties

Major duties and responsibilities include:

  • Tests samples from aeration tanks in graduated cylinders and makes up necessary reagents to conduct analytical tests;
  • Calculates items such as flows, pH and temperatures;
  • Starts, operates and stops manually controlled equipment, including chemical pumps, transfer pumps, clarifier drives, sand filters, and air blowers;
  • Cleans, changes or replaces bar screen and comminutor, aeration tanks, secondary clarifiers, sewer and scum tanks, pumps, valves, air filters, flow meter charts, flow Parshall flumes, sand filters, anti-foam equipment, decks, weirs and troughs;
  • Monitors plant conditions for proper chemical feeds;
  • Performs other related duties as assigned
  • Removes floating debris from aeration basin troughs and wastes scum from the clarifiers to the aerobic sludge holding tank;
  • Performs operator level maintenance, to include minor leak repair, component replacement and safety testing, etc.;
  • Regulates air into the aeration basins and sludge holding tank;
  • Periodically checks automatic controlled equipment to evaluate and determine proper operation, adjusts and takes corrective action when needed;
  • Maintains test reports and daily logs, charts and other records as required; and
  • Pumps sludge from the sludge holding tank to contractor transport trucks;
  • Operates and maintains five (5) Sanipur Water Disinfection Systems;
  • Performs Monochloramine and Free Ammonia residual tests to ensure proper disinfection of water;
  • Checks operation of ultraviolet disinfection unit and cleans debris from same;
Work Schedule: Sunday through Thursday orTuesday through Saturday, 6:00am to 2:30pm. Subject to overtime when required.

Additional Conditions of Employment
  • Must satisfactorily complete Introduction to Water and Wastewater Operation part 1 and 2 courses within 18 months of hire as a prerequisite for licensure in the State of New Jersey.
  • Must obtain a New Jersey State NJDEP S-1 Wastewater Plant Operator's License within 24 months of date of initial employment. Once issues a license, must maintain license training contact hours for license renewal as required by NJDEP. Courses and License fees are at incumbent's own expense.
  • Must become a certified Lab Technician on NJDEP Lab Permit within 18 months of hire.

Qualifications

PHYSICAL EFFORT: The work performed requires walking, standing, stooping, kneeling, sitting, crouching, climbing ladders, stairs and steps. Must have good eyesight and hearing. Must also be able to lift weights of up to fifty pounds. Moderate effort is required to operate valves and controls, and to reposition heavy hoses and pumps as necessary. When performing repairs or making installations or performing preventive maintenance, required to use both hands above the head as well as below the shoulders. Works in confined spaces when cleaning and inspecting clarifiers, contact tanks, aeration tanks and sand filters and shall follow all prescribed safety practices including the use of proper safety equipment.
WORK CONDITIONS: Exposed to contact with sewage, high voltage, and heavy-duty equipment. Required to work around moving machinery. Cuts, bruises, and broken bones may result from accidents while working around tanks, machinery and equipment. Works generally outdoors, subject to all prevailing weather conditions. Exposed to adverse weather conditions, dangers with chemicals and open tanks.

Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element (WG-2 and higher only; screen-outs are not applicable to WG-1). Applicants who appear to meet the screen out element are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated from consideration. The potential eligibles are rated against the remainder of the job elements. While a specific length of training and experience is not required, your responses to the questionnaire must be supported by detailed descriptions of your experience on your resume.
