Job Description

OVERVIEW

Based in Houston, Texas, the company provides outsourced maintenance, repair, life safety and construction services to healthcare facilities across multiple states. The company’s non-discretionary maintenance and light construction services focus on improving patient safety and environment of care standards in hospital settings.

Our client made a majority equity investment in the company in early 2022. The purpose of the transaction was to recapitalize the Company and build out a platform for accelerated growth. The company is expected to grow the Company to $100+ million in revenue over the next several years through a combination of organic and acquisition growth.

POSITION SUMMARY

The VP Operations will be a key member of the senior management team and will be considered a strategic partner to the President. This executive will oversee all aspects of operations, including the field service team, job quoting and estimating, quality, safety, technical training, and back-office administration. The role will also drive accountability for process creation, implementation, and execution across the operations.

The right candidate must have the strengths and values of a founder’s mentality: relentless drive for execution and accountability, continuous process improvement and empowerment to achieve excellence. This executive will have proven experience establishing the processes and procedures necessary to create a best-in-class specialty construction and field service organization. This position will allow the VP of Operations to develop the appropriate supporting management team and organizational structure to scale with the organization as the company continues to grow but is expected to be very much a ‘hands on’ role.

Reports To - President

Educational and Experiential Requirements

  • 10+ years of relevant experience.
  • Experience in an entrepreneurial middle-market company without the central resources of a large corporation a plus, ideally in a private equity or venture backed environment.

▪ Industry work experience in construction, specialty general contractor or technician field service industry is preferred.

▪ Experienced candidates with background in operational or turnaround management consulting are encouraged to apply.

▪ Background with profit and loss responsibilities in a multi-site/multi-location model is preferred.

  • Experience leveraging IT and business analytics tools to drive process efficiency.

▪ Undergraduate degree, an MBA or engineering degree a plus.

  • Background in a highly technical or regulated environment a plus.
  • Some experience with acquisitions and/or operations integration a plus but not required.
  • Experience in ERP implementation and optimization a plus but not required.

RESPONSIBILITIES

▪ Rebuild, implement, and standardize daily, weekly and monthly operational and financial key performance indicators (“KPI”) for review by President and the Board. KPIs include but are not limited to quoting activity, pipeline, work order activity, backlog, invoicing, collections, workforce regular/overtime hours, technician productivity and profitability, etc.

▪ Design and implement scalable job scheduling/dispatching, project estimating, employee timekeeping, job quote to cash collections, purchase to pay and record to report models by leveraging technology and business analytics dashboards to drive efficiency in a field service technician team.

▪ Establish a scalable process and controls to ensure the highest standard of technical training, safety, and job quality through the organization.

▪ Continually investigate and introduce process improvement measures and present suggestions to President for consideration.

▪ Participate in vendor procurement negotiations to ensure product relevance and cost-efficiency.

▪ Oversee payroll and review labor costs for discrepancies.

COMPENSATION

Base salary, incentive bonus and possible potential equity participation.

GENERAL DISCUSSION OF RESPONSIBILITIES, MISSION, AND STRATEGY

The VP Operations will be a key strategic member of the senior management team and will have the opportunity to meaningfully impact the operational strategy of the business starting day one. This is a “hands on” position and the VP Operations will be expected to operate with a lean team, particularly in the first year. The VP Operations will need to hit the ground running, be largely self-directed, team-oriented, and willing to work long hours. Key responsibilities will include managing and improving all aspects of service delivery as well as providing other senior managers with the strategic analysis & recommendations required to make critical business decisions.

The stated objective is to grow the Company to a $100+ million Company within the next several years through a combination of organic growth and acquisitions. The VP Operations will have responsibility for integrating operations of acquired companies.

DISCUSSION OF PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS AND “FIT”

The VP Operations will be a strategic member of the senior team but also be willing and able to roll up his/her sleeves and take a direct hand in developing, measuring, and improving key metrics related to service delivery, efficiency, and profitability. The candidate must be energetic, driven and have a professional demeanor. The highest integrity is a must. The right candidate will command excellent oral and written communication skills and be comfortable directly overseeing a large team. The VP Operations will necessarily interact with employees across all levels of the organization and must be personable enough to build relationships with employees ranging from field technicians to the C-suite.

DISCUSSION OF QUALIFICATIONS

The company is seeking a team-oriented individual with a consistent record of accomplishments. It believes that a minimum 10 years of experience is likely required to succeed in this position but welcomes candidates with slightly less experience provided the candidate can demonstrate exceptional capabilities and a track record of success. The company prefers candidates with an MBA or other relevant advanced degree. Ideally, the candidate has experience with both large ‘best in class’ organizations and entrepreneurial middle-market companies. Experience in related industries, including but not limited to general contractor, construction, and technician field service industry verticals, and/or with private equity-backed investor is preferred. The company seeks a process-oriented candidate with a deep understanding of building processes and a demonstrated ability to drive change within an organization. Candidates with experience in “hands-on” operational or turnaround management consulting are encouraged to apply.

OTHER

The position will be based in Houston, Texas. The VP of Operations will be eligible for a competitive base salary, incentive bonus and possible equity participation.
