Job Description

We are constantly on a mission to add smart, innovative, and proactive team members and are looking for a Vice President, Merchandising to join our New York based headquarters.


The Role:


Reporting to the Chief Merchandising Officer, the VP, Merchandising will be responsible for leading all Tommy John men’s and women’s product categories in driving sales, growth, and margin results to support seasonal and company objectives. With a comprehensive understanding of the customer, the Merchant will collaborate to drive these goals standing from creation of strategy, category, concept, design and development, planning, go-to-market and life cycle management. The ideal candidate connects deeply with the Tommy John brand and is able to develop and execute an impactful growth strategy for the brand. This individual demonstrates resiliency, a growth mindset and has a bias for action, with a strong pulse on the market. This role is highly analytical, creative, detail-oriented and collaborative.


Responsibilities:


Strategy, Leadership & Cross-Functional Collaboration:

Inspire, engage, and manage a high-performing team to drive standardized, scalable solutions with the consumer top of mind


  • Partner with the Design team to develop and present a cohesive & detailed Seasonal Road Map to the Cross-Functional Teams, inclusive of Marketing and Product Creation. This should communicate product introductions and focuses – big ideas, hero silhouettes, eco-systems, innovation and growth strategies to engage new and repeat customers and to fuel acquisition and drive the business
  • Develop and execute short and long term brand merchandising strategy - 3 year, annual, seasonal and monthly merchandise plans for category in collaboration with Design, Planning, Product Development and Production
  • Work closely with Wholesale & Retail counterparts to gain understanding of customer/ account selling trends, collect market feedback & discuss assortment opportunities
  • Lead the Merchandising and cross-functional teams in driving sales, growth, and margin results, supporting financial and brand objectives based on a thorough understanding of our customers and the market; Identify key white space opportunities for categories
  • Lead the team in creating and executing seasonal category strategies which incorporate data insights, customer feedback and competitive and financial analysis
  • Collaborate with Design and Marketing to develop an annual product road map in addition to monthly promotional plans to support revenue and brand growth, achieve gross margin targets, and manage inventory to optimize the core and seasonal product investments
  • Collaborate with the Site Merchandising team in leveraging the site experience to drive customer engagement and conversion through consistent review, assessment and revisions to the site experience
  • Create and Present a Seasonal SKU Plan to Design team, ensuring there is a clear strategy and direction for the season, which relates to a longer term strategy and incorporates customer insights, competitive trends, proprietary data and selling highlights


Planning & Analysis for Growth, Profitability, and Managing Risk

  • Leverage Strategic thinking as it relates to long-term growth strategies, making recommendations across departments and leveraging a diverse experience of departments, customer, data insight, and selling results
  • Create Monthly Buys for all categories, presenting a clear product & margin strategy leadership; Ensure all key metrics are detailed and explained. Size Breaks to be included
  • Attend and present at WBR/ MBR and other Executive Meetings, providing analysis, data and future insights with regards to anything Design and Merchandising related
  • Analyze sales and inventory issues to maximize sales. Give clear direction to Site Merchandising and the Creative teams to shoot new product combinations
  • Create and present a comprehensive Seasonal Hindsight, which identifies Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats, which feed into creating Strategies for upcoming seasons
  • Oversee the creation, distribution and review: Weekly & Monthly Business Reviews, Best Sellers (item/outfit) Recap, Monthly (item/outfit) Recap, and Seasonal Hindsight
  • Work closely with CRM & Marketing Managers on ad hoc projects that relate to Product Descriptions, Filters, etc.
  • Keep up to date on all Customer Product Reviews and Social Media sentiment. Partner with Design and Production teams to continually make product improvements and changes
  • Keep abreast of Competition and Fashion and Macro Trends. Conduct monthly/ quarterly Comp Shopping trips with cross-functional team
  • Identify, assess and address in-season merchandising and planning risks and opportunities to achieve performance and financial targets and increase profit
  • Work closely with Production & Supply Chain to ensure timely receipt of goods
  • Collaborate with Planning team and General Manager to manage OTB, Unit Receipts, and Gross Margin %


Experience, Skills, & Attributes:

  • 8+ years’ experience, in a Director or above Merchandising role with a Bachelor’s Degree in Merchandising or related field
  • Demonstrates alignment with TJ core values: Humble, Adaptable, Mindful, GSD, & Curious
  • Proven track record of building, leading and managing teams with diverse skill sets, and the ability to hire and develop talent
  • Ability to be equally adept at the broadest strategic level and manual day to day management of tools and systems
  • Excellent writing, communication and presentation skills
  • Previous strategic experience in DTC space
  • Analytical, Creative team player, who can also work independently, with the ability to problem-solve and work in a fast-moving, agile environment with numerous deadlines, across multiple cross-functional partners and seasons
  • Strong interest in fashion, performance, and the evolving digital/retail landscape as well as a strong knowledge of suppliers and contacts within the industry
  • Proficiency in using various technology platforms including Google Suite, Photoshop and Adobe
