Brief Summary of Job Duties

Under the direction of the Undergraduate Lab Coordinator, the Undergraduate Lab Committee, Department Chair, and Management Services Officer (MSO), serves as the Undergraduate Laboratory (ChE 180) Manager, Department Safety Officer / Hazardous Communications Coordinator and acts as Departmental Building Manager. General duties include: (1) management and maintenance of the Chemical Engineering undergraduate teaching laboratories, (2) promoting and enforcing safety in departmental facilities, (3) acting as liaison for Department issues related to facilities management.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum one year of engineering laboratory experience.
  • Ability to design, acquire, and conduct data analysis/interpretation with users.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop/modify laboratory safety regulations and practice, ensuring compliance.
  • Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering or related Engineering field or equivalent training and/or experience.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and/or control all aspects of instrumentation use, operation, and upkeep.
  • Strong analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills with the ability to organize multiple tasks and frequent deadlines in parallel.
  • Knowledge and understanding of laboratory safety policy, procedures, and implementation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Hands-on experience with the design and construction of mechanical, electrical, optical, and chemical systems at the laboratory and pilot scales.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate/maintain a wide range of analytical equipment and instruments.
  • Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering.
  • Generalized understanding of computer hardware, computer-based data acquisition, and equipment control interfaces; programming experience with LabView and MatLab.

Job Functions/Percentage of Time/Duties

  • Building Manager - 10% - Responsible for managing building issues for the Chemical Engineering Department by coordinating and overseeing Facilities Management, Furniture Services, EH&S, Custodial and outside vendors in order to coordinate preventative maintenance, initiate building repairs, installation of equipment, and building modifications. Professionally consult with faculty, post docs, graduate and undergraduate students on research-related technical issues using engineering knowledge to assist design and implementation of lab experiments. Machines custom parts for experimental equipment as needed for research teaching labs. Builds and installs necessary modifications for the engineering buildings to ensure proper operation. Provides engineering consultation services to researchers in other ChE labs on lab safety, experimental set up, equipment modifications, experimental design and fabrication, as well as assistance in research and purchasing of high value lab equipment. Coordinates departmental equipment loans to various labs for short-term use.
  • Undergraduate Lab Manager - 75% - The UG lab manager, through consultation and interaction with the UG Lab Committee, ChE LSOE and faculty instructors, is responsible for all engineering, technical, and logistical support services related to operation of the Rinker Laboratory and Asbury Laboratory in Chemical Engineering. This work includes assisting with lab experiment design; construction, maintenance, and setup of experiments; calibration of analytical instrumentation; and maintenance of computer systems associated with data acquisition and control, as detailed below: - Engineering Design: Designs, modifies, and specifies scientific instruments and computer based data acquisition systems. Assists in designing and constructing new lab experiments using fundamental and applied skills in chemical, mechanical, and electrical engineering. Fabricates, assembles, interfaces and tests lab experiments. Proposes new experiments to the UG Lab Committee, ChE LSOE, and faculty instructors with the intent of broadening the course curriculum and hands-on training. Designs and implements improvements to existing experiments using knowledge of fundamental engineering techniques, principals, research and teaching objectives to keep existing experiments modern and relevant in the chemical engineering discipline. - Experimental: Provides generalized information and proposes and/or directs experiments to improve analytical techniques and quality of data. Utilizes lab equipment to carry out additional experiments in transport phenomena, kinetics, separations, and process control to improve lab course instruction and hands-on training of students. Stays abreast of new technology and research to maintain a knowledge base that is leading the field. - Maintenance and Repair: Diagnoses chemical, electrical, electronic, and mechanical problems associated with lab experiments and data acquisition systems. Acts as engineering liaison between department personnel and equipment manufacturers. Responsible for repair and maintenance of all teaching laboratory equipment and analytical instrumentation, which includes updating and installing computer hardware and software, procuring and replacing necessary items, and machining custom parts as needed. Maintains equipment redundancy to ensure seamless lab operations during experiments. Test runs all lab experiments before each course to ensure proper operation. - Instructional: Instructs and monitors students in the use of analytical instrumentation; provides general theory of operation of various analytical tools, and the acquisition of experimental data to students. Gives demonstrations on instrument theory and use. Trains Teaching Assistants how to operate lab experiments and use analytical instrumentation. Provides professional guidance including assistance and instruction of the proper operation of lab equipment and data acquisition systems. Ensures safe working practices for all lab users, TAs and faculty.
  • Safety Officer - 10% - Serves as the Department Safety Officer and Hazardous Communications Coordinator by promoting and enforcing safety for departmental facilities in Engineering II, Buildings 570, 489 and any other departmental space. Coordinates with EH&S for inspection and enforcement of safe working practices/conditions and hazardous material disposal. Ensures that the Department is in compliance with all new and changing Federal and State regulations. Advises individuals regarding laboratory and office safety procedures. Provides emergency first response to hazardous situations within departmental areas, including chemical spills, fire, or release of toxic gas. Diagnoses emergency and hazardous situations and contacts appropriate agencies. Serves as the Department member of the Community Emergency Response Team. Maintains a working knowledge of the following safety plans: Chemical Hygiene Plan, Emergency Action Plan, Injury & Illness Prevention Plan, and the Lab Safety Standard and the Hazard Communication Program. Responsible for safety and coordination of departmental gases and case cage including coordination with vendors, lab personnel, and PIs for delivery and pickup of gases.
  • Outreach/Representation - 5% - In conjunction with the UG Lab Committee and faculty instructors, represents the Chemical Engineering Undergraduate Teaching lab to the campus community. Provides Chemical Engineering Department and Laboratory tours to prospective undergraduate students and visitors.
