We are seeking a highly motivated Senior Manager, Lab Operations. The senior manager will be the point person for laboratory operations including EH&S, inventory and equipment management, and lab space management. The successful candidate will be enthusiastic to foster collaboration with various R&D teams including Discovery, Biomarker and Bioanalytical Sciences, Clinical Development and Technical Operations, and will take responsibility for the administrative, technical, and scientific operations of the lab. As a growing startup, the operations duties and leadership will grow and include ad hoc facilities duties. The Senior Manager, Lab Operations will have the opportunity to play a key role in the strategic development of the laboratory in alignment with corporate needs and regulatory requirements. The role reports to the Senior Director, Research Operations and is based in South San Francisco, California.
ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Establish standard operating procedures and best work practices and reinforce good laboratory upkeep and regulatory compliance
- Serve as the primary point of contact for lab operations for all internal stakeholders such as lab scientists, Facilities, EH&S, Finance, and IT
- Contribute ideas that can positively impact lab operations and driving continuous improvements in all areas of EH&S, space, equipment, and consumable management
- Ensure that the laboratory operates safely, effectively, and efficiently, in accordance with currently recognized best practices and established regulatory standards and guidelines
- Maintain, manage, and respond to remote monitoring systems
- Manage laboratory renovation and improvement projects by compiling a business case, coordinating stakeholders, and driving resolution and deliverables
- Define, champion, and provide oversight for GxP/GLP related lab operational activities (e.g. management of GxP lab equipment, vendors, records, trainings, etc) in compliance with applicable SOPs and in collaboration with relevant internal cross-functional stakeholders in research, biomarker and bioanalytical sciences, development operations (e.g. quality, compliance), facilities, etc
- Lead lab safety initiatives in close collaboration with EH&S, advocating for our safety culture, and ensuring documentation is current, complete, and accessible
- Manage lab equipment inventory and overseeing the equipment lifecycle including services such as calibration, maintenance, service contract renewal, software/hardware upgrades, decommissioning, and moves
- Work closely with multiple external parties such as service providers and supply vendors
- Manage laboratory inventory of reagents, consumables, and lab gasses (CO2, LN2, etc)
REQUIREMENTS:
- Updated and thorough understanding of lab processes such as EH&S protocols, knowledge of handling chemicals and hazardous materials, PPE requirements, BSL2 lab support, and SOP development
- Experience successfully managing oversight of external vendors
- Hands-on experience in a GxP laboratory environment and ability to define and execute solutions for compliance
- A detail-oriented team player with a strong desire to learn, great communication skills and the ability to influence without formal authority.
- Ability to lift and move 20 lbs is required
- BS/MS in Life Sciences related discipline with 3+ years of experience managing lab/facility operations. Industry experience is required.
- Demonstrated experience making tactical decisions for day-to-day troubleshooting aligned with lab operations strategy
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced start-up company environment with potentially minimal direction and the ability to adjust workload based upon changing priorities.
- History of preparing/passing safety audits
