Job Description
Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The Theatrical and Performing Arts Director's primary focus will be the Theater's artistic, organizational, and relational management. The director will collaborate with the Theater Facilities Foreman and theater staff to plan and operate the day-to-day functions of the Theater. The director will also teach theater/film/drama classes during the year. Under the direction of the Dean of Arts and Sciences, the director will also oversee the operational and personnel activities of the department and serve as a liaison between the administration and faculty. The director provides the support to the instructional department necessary to ensure students can meet their learning objectives.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities

  • Serve as the coordinator and assist in scheduling all events at the Martinez Fina Arts Center.
  • Teach courses, both on and off campus, such as Drama.
  • Plan and direct yearly theatrical shows with college students and community members through continuing education programs.
  • Serve as the stage manager for community events held at the Martinez Fine Arts Center when needed.
  • Help develop and implement the college's long-range strategic plan, closely collaborating with the campus leadership to uphold the college's guiding mission, vision, and values.
  • Assist as Creative Liaison with Laredo Theater Guild International's productions.

7. Ensure the quality of the curricula by monitoring the effectiveness of instruction and the assessment of program and course outcomes. Follow appropriate guidelines to implement changes for courses or degree programs.

8. Assist in the recruitment, interviewing, selection, hiring, orientation, supervision, and evaluation of full-time and adjunct faculty, work-study students, and support staff.

9. Support and promote teaching effectiveness and professional growth development for faculty and staff.

10. Support and promote student success associated with student recruitment, advising, and retention.

11. Provide a safe environment for students and ensure security of assigned equipment, materials, and classrooms.

12. Serve as a mediator when conflicts and/or disagreements occur with faculty, staff, or students.

13. Obtain information and prepare reports to comply with educational, funding, IE, and accrediting agency's requirements. Adhere to prescribed deadlines.

14. Establish and maintain external relationships that benefit instruction, including business and industry, community, secondary and post-secondary institutions, and other appropriate agencies.

15. Fulfill an instructional load and all associated duties required if applicable to area.

16. Ensure compliance of LC, Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, and Southern Association of Colleges and Schools policies and procedures; ensure compliance with related accreditation and institutional effectiveness activities about supervised areas.

17. Promote community involvement and positively support college programs.

18. Perform other duties assigned by the Dean of Arts and Sciences and Provost/Vice-President of Academic Affairs.

Qualifications/Certifications/Licenses/Skills

Required:

  • Master’s Degree in Fine Arts or a Master’s Degree with a minimum of 18 graduate hours in Fine Arts.
  • Graduate coursework hours must be aligned with course learning outcomes that instructor will be teaching.
  • A person with an MFA degree should be able to teach courses related to the artistic field at the college level, such as Drama
  • The Theatrical and Performing Arts Director’s credentials must meet the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) required criteria to teach within the discipline(s) of the department they supervise.
  • A minimum of four years experience in theater production.
  • Experience setting the stage for music, theatre, dance, and corporate-type events.
  • As required by discipline(s).
  • Experience in managing and instructing lighting crews, carpenters, sound technicians, and rigging crews is a must.

Preferred:

  • Doctorate Degree from an accredited institution of higher education

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

The theatrical and performing arts director should possess strong leadership and administrative skills and extensive knowledge of the theater and performing arts. Essential skills and abilities include effectively managing and overseeing a department, coordinating and planning events, collaborating with faculty and staff, maintaining budget and finances, and ensuring compliance with college policies and procedures.
Additionally, they should know about instructional design, curriculum development, and student advising and support services.
Strong communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills are also crucial in this role.
The director should have a thorough understanding of lighting, sound, rigging, and event production required.
Ability to operate specialized instruments and equipment such as; dimmer racks, lighting consoles, sound consoles, recording equipment, visual aids, and rigging systems.
Ability to build sets and scenery for plays, operas, dance recitals, and other events of community enrichment
