Atomic Machines Inc.

Employment type FULL_TIME
Salary $175,000 - $225,000 a year

Job Description
Our mission at Atomic Machines is to bring autonomous bits-to-atoms manufacturing of anything at any scale to the world, and we are well on our way. We are developing an entirely new class of manufacturing foundry for micro- and nano-scale machines, and we are using that foundry to create products the world has heretofore been unable to build. Our first device has exceptionally strong and large-scale product-market fit: it is both iconic of what our platform can do and a driver of very significant enterprise scale.

Joining forces with us means becoming part of an incredibly talented, inventive and passionate multi-disciplinary team running hard to make our platform, devices and vision a reality. You will have the opportunity to help define the company from its earliest days. You’ll be challenged to learn and grow as a builder and a leader as the company itself grows rapidly. And you will receive significant equity compensation - you’ll truly be a company owner and benefit financially from our overall success.

Our offices are located in Berkeley and Santa Clara, California.

About the role:

We are seeking an experienced Technical Program Manager to own and manage the development timeline for delivering key systems for our robotic manufacturing platform “AMP”. The ideal applicant is highly technical, principled and thrives in a dynamic, collaborative, apolitical workplace. He/she will be responsible for leading the hardware, software and electronics development, working closely with our cross-functional engineering team. This role can be based in either Berkeley, CA or Santa Clara, CA.

What you’ll do:

  • Understand and manage technical dependencies across subsystems, cross-node requirements, and systemic technical concerns.
  • Develop, update and publish schedules for each phase of development.
  • Support engineering teams in implementing and following release processes, engineering changes, and configuration management.
  • Act as scrum master for sprint planning, reviews and retrospectives.
  • Work with the team to establish clear requirements and roadmaps for individual areas and the system as a whole.
  • Develop internal processes to support Quality Management System and to satisfy customer and ISO audits.
  • Work with outside parties including customers, suppliers, and contract manufacturers with minimal aid from engineers.
  • Support efforts to engage contract manufacturing for AMP Nodes or subassemblies.
  • Coordinate with other program managers and upper management to ensure programs are not blocked by other programs.
  • Efficiently manage/participate in design discussions.
  • Identify critical points of multi-person collaboration and ensure those collaborations occur and achieve desired outcomes.
  • Facilitate cross-functional communication and problem solving.
  • Map the business objectives to the technology development effort and work with the AMP team to ensure business objectives are achieved, including: schedule, device cost, capital costs, yield, and scaling (throughput and, later, latency).
  • Participate in supplier selection for potential Contract Manufacturers (CMs) by providing expert evaluation of the CM’s program management capabilities.
  • Identify and understand technical gaps or risks that need to be addressed.
  • Plan and lead FMEA (Failure Mode and Effect Analysis) work for Nodes and subsystems.
  • Lead the development effort for one or more AMP Nodes or subsystems.
  • Establish a shared plan (between CM and AM) that (1) starts with early DFM feedback from CM, (2) gets CM engaged in building alpha/beta builds and (3) culminates in production builds by CM on schedule, cost, and Service Level Agreements.
  • Must be sufficiently technical to have efficient and rich conversations with the engineering team. Ideally, you will have a deep academic background in mechanical engineering.
  • Work with the design team to follow the Atomic Machines development process, including preparing for and participating in gate review meetings.

What you’ll need:

  • Intellectual honesty.
  • Excellent communication skills - articulate, concise/crisp, high signal-to-noise ratio.
  • Experience releasing products to manufacturing following a defined process.
  • 2+ years of experience in a significant role as a Technical Program Manager for complex mechanical products with electronic/software control from NPI (new product introduction) to commercial release (and beyond, ideally).
  • 5+ years of nontrivial experience as a hands-on engineer, preferably ME, designing and building complex systems.
  • At least an understanding of (if not direct experience using) agile methodologies and able to intelligently articulate how to approach building hardware using agile.
  • At least a BS from a reputable university in mechanical engineering (EE or CS are acceptable alternatives with a strong proficiency in ME).
  • High EQ / strong in working with people, motivational.
  • Experience managing at least one project where the mechanical engineering aspects involved more than just static structures like chambers, casings, etc., but additionally involved moving mechanical parts, kinematics, motion control, etc. Ideally high-precision motion control, sensing, closed feedback loops, complex hardware/software interactions. Engaged deeply in technical work, not just an administrator.
The compensation for this position includes equity and benefits.
