This position is either remote within the Pacific Northwest Region, or can be hybrid-remote in Sacramento or Oakland, California.

A DAY IN THE LIFE
We are looking for a person to be involved in all aspects of producing high quality deliverables that, beyond basic editing tasks, includes coordinating with professionals, managers, and support staff (graphics, report production, shipping) to assure quality reviews are performed, confirm report details are correct and complete, conduct final checks on printed materials, and manage the shipping and electronic submission of reports to clients.
The Technical Editor will support a variety of environmental projects and is able to write and convey thoughts and ideas in a clear, concise manner, demonstrates strong communication skills, and has the ability to work effectively both with peers and independently. We seek a technically proficient individual with the ability to proofread and correct written documents for grammar, punctuation, clarity, and consistency with company and client formats.
Documents include work plans, technical reports, white papers, conference abstracts, client proposals, presentation materials, and fact sheets. We are looking for a person to be involved in all aspects of producing high quality deliverables that, beyond basic editing tasks, includes coordinating with professionals, managers, and support staff (graphics, report production, shipping) to assure quality reviews are performed, confirm report details are correct and complete, conduct final checks on printed materials, and manage the shipping and electronic submission of reports to clients.
As a key member of the Pacific Northwest team, this role will be responsible for a full range of activities including:
  • Supports operations through production of external reports, including formatting, binding, CD compilation, and shipping coordination.
  • Proofreading: compares the final version of the document with the marked-up version to make sure that all corrections have been made.
  • Copyediting: ensures that the document is mechanically correct (spelling, punctuation, and grammar) and stylistically consistent.
  • Exercises safe work practices by following all Company safety rules and OSHA regulations, including attendance at all required safety training programs.
  • Review, format, and edit a variety of documents, including reports, proposals, technical memoranda, letters, cost estimate spreadsheets, procedures, manuals, and marketing and related materials.
  • Participate in the design and development of marketing brochures, conference materials, public relations announcements and other materials.
  • Periodically review document templates to assess need for format or content updates.
  • Select or recommend use of layouts, graphics, drawings, tables, exhibits, and illustrations or charts to amplify or clarify publication objectives.
  • Comprehensive editing: reviews both content (for completeness, accuracy, and appropriate language) and form (for organization, visual design, and usability).
  • Participates in Company’s continuous improvement programs and provides support to team efforts.
  • Ensure documents meet editorial and customer specifications and adhere to standards for quality, graphics, format, and style.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Periodically create and deliver brief instructional presentations to staff on topics related to language, writing, or corporate style.
  • Support writing and editing assignments as needed for business development and sales activities.
  • Create and uphold corporate standards for all documents including style guides for various Departments.
  • Maintains confidentiality at all times.
  • Keeps up-to-date and current on industry trends by completing formal training, reviewing professional publications, and attending professional workshops.
  • Remain current on new developments in technical writing, editing, and publishing, including technological enhancements that may affect the company.
YOUR EXPERTISE AND SKILLS

  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions to present to supervisors.

  • Advanced skills with Microsoft Office Suite.

  • Strong problem solving and analytical skills.
  • Technical knowledge of the services provided in assigned area is preferred.
  • Able to work independently manage multiple responsibilities (i.e. self-starter, self-motivated).
  • Knowledge - General knowledge of basic editorial principles (grammar, sentence structure, punctuation, etc.)
  • Ability to interface with cross-functional teams and all levels of personnel/management.
  • Possible work environments could include normal office working conditions in a well-lit, climate-controlled environment with minimal exposure to contaminants.
  • Bachelor's Degree in a writing intensive field such as English, Rhetoric, or similar discipline, or demonstrated equivalency of education and experience.
  • While performing the responsibilities of the job, the employee may be required to spend long hours sitting and using office equipment and computers, and is regularly required to sit, talk, and hear. The employee frequently is required to use hands and fingers to handle or feel. There may be occasional lifting (overhead, waist level) from the floor of supplies and materials weighing no more than 30 pounds. The work may involve some bending, standing or walking. Out of office site visits could potentially have more strenuous physical demands.
  • Proficiency in standard office suite software applications especially in MS Word and basic experience with PowerPoint and Excel.
  • Knowledge of computer aided software (Microsoft Suite, Google Suite, AutoCAD, ArcGIS, etc.).
  • Work environment will vary greatly depending on nature of assigned tasks.
  • 1 year of applicable experience preferred.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
