Staff Trading Analyst, Energy Markets

What To Expect
We are seeking a Trading Analyst to drive continual performance improvements of Tesla's in-house automated trading platform, Autobidder, which manages the largest fleet of battery storage projects in the world, ranging from utility-scale batteries to virtual power plants.
As part of the Autobidder Operations team, you will leverage your knowledge of wholesale energy markets to analyze and report on the performance of the growing Autobidder fleet worldwide. You will be responsible for generating insightful and actionable analyses, communicating complex and nuanced topics to broad audiences, and presenting to internal and external stakeholders. You will work closely with Trading Engineers and your work will inform the deployment of new trading strategies under defined market conditions, will support operating committee reviews and will include real-time monitoring of Autobidder, balancing risk and expected returns from different trading strategies.
You will contribute to Tesla's mission to accelerate the world's transition to sustainable energy by driving continuous improvement in battery revenues and accelerating the storage adoption needed to support high renewable power systems. You have a passion for tackling open ended analysis, and then applying it to deliver concrete value. You have a bias towards action and excel on collaborative fast-paced teams.
What You’ll Do

• Understand and explain how the global Autobidder fleet is performing and why relative to competitor benchmarks and simulated benchmarks.
• Participate in on-call rotations for Autobidder market operations.
• Define and report on clear KPIs, and contribute ideas for improving field performance.
• Work alongside algorithm engineers and software engineers to automate and scale reporting tools.
• Lead regular meetings across Tesla, with customers, and with external organizations to communicate overall fleet performance.
• Develop analytical and reporting tools in Python that help monitor the performance of the wholesale battery fleet and provide insights into future trading decisions.
• Structure batch experiments through our proprietary simulation platform and conduct forensic analysis of outputs to explain performance and identify opportunities for algorithmic improvements.

What You’ll Bring

• Ability to work effectively with cross functional teams and produce and coordinate time sensitive deliverables.
• Track record of positively impacting investment or trading decisions through your own market analysis and insights.
• Professional experience evaluating performance using simulations and defining KPIs.
• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Engineering or Economics.
• Attention to detail and keen sense for accuracy are extremely critical.
• Exceptional data management skills with the ability to work with large amounts of data and organize in a logical and efficient manner.
• Excellent communication, written and interpersonal skills and ability to clearly communicate results internally and externally.
• Ability to work in a fast paced and dynamic environment with changing priorities.

Preferred Experience:

Python proficiency: Able to run, modify, and build analytical tools. Able to manipulate, analyze, and visualize data.

Direct experience in energy-related commodity trading or electricity market research.

Experience with both energy and ancillary service products as well as with stationary storage is preferred.

Expected Compensation
$76,000 - $276,000/annual salary + cash and stock awards + benefits
Pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements dependent on the position offered.
