Sr. Cell Test Engineer, Cell Design

Tesla’s Cell Development Team is looking for a Battery Cell Test Engineer to drive electrochemical, mechanical, and thermal characterization of our existing and future electrode and cells as we incorporate new materials, processes, and designs. This is a hands-on role where you will be expected to build test vehicles (e.g., 3-electrode cells), extract specimens, and manage multiple tests in parallel. You will analyze data and share results with the broader cell engineering and development teams to drive cell design decisions.

• Dissect cells of various form factors and extract electrodes for characterization and root cause analysis
• Design boutique techniques for characterizing various electrochemical properties and measuring performance
• Build coin cells, half-cells, pouch cells and other form factors for electrochemical and mechanical testing
• Implement existing electrochemical testing protocols and develop new ones towards characterizing battery performance and reliability for Tesla’s cell designs (materials, electrode, stack changes)

• Background in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Electrochemistry, or similar.
• Comfortable working in a glove box and handling wet chemistry
• Experience with common cell testing equipment (potentiostats, cyclers, etc.)
• Familiarity with battery cell operation and testing.
• Experience with designing customized equipment and fixtures is a plus, but not required
• Ability to communicate and consolidate information across multiple stakeholders and teams.
