Job Description
What to Expect
Tesla is looking for an associate engineer to help lead the method development and proliferation of advanced chemical analysis techniques such as IC, AA, and ICP-OES in our cathode analytical lab; to lead the effort on fully automate the lab data processing and data management; and to assist in the exploration of various chemical and materials characterization techniques to be used as process diagnostic and control tools for mass-scale cathode production. The successful candidate will be a core member of an interdisciplinary materials team focusing on manufacturing high-performance cathode materials for Li ion batteries.

What You’ll Do
  • Lead all data management efforts to automate all analytical data generated in the cathode analytical lab, and integrate the system with cathode group’s existing data management system
  • Help lead analytical method development and qualification for IC (Ion Chromatography) technique to analyze various anions including nitrate, sulfate, and chloride, as well as some organic anions
  • Help lead analytical method development and qualification using AA (Atomic Absorption) technique for accurate and direct Li to TM (Transition Metal) ratio determination
  • Leading software development efforts using computer science skills, especially image processing skills, to enable optical methods for chemical and materials characterization to be used in cathode manufacturing
  • Assist in establishing process diagnostic and control capability for cathode manufacturing processes by exploring the use of various optical techniques for chemical and materials characterization

What You’ll Bring
  • Deep technical background and practical training in chemistry, chemical engineering, materials science / metallurgy, and data science / computer science
  • Strong data science and computer science background with hands-on experience in using Python and other skills to automate data acquisition, analysis, reporting, and management.
  • Proactive, Self-driven, Risk-taking, and able to learn from failure and mistakes to fast improve
  • Excellent people skills, communication, and project management skills to be able to help form working groups addressing various technical issues in the lab and in production
  • Working experience in using various types of machine learning and image processing software to develop optical analytical methods for chemical and materials characterization
  • 2+ years of lab experience working on developing and applying wet chemical analysis techniques such as ICP-OES, IC, AA, and titration to analyze both solid and liquid samples, with hands-on experience on solid materials digestion based on different types of chemical reactions
