Job Overview
Reporting to the Director of Accounting, the Senior Accountant is a key member of the finance team supporting the cost accounting, revenue recognition and reporting of monthly results. This team member will work closely with revenue, costing, and inventory transactions to support day-to-day and month-end accounting functions with quality, accuracy, and integrity. The role will be challenged to seek, propose, and drive process improvements across their related areas of responsibilities. The ideal candidate is someone who approaches tasks with an innovative, service-oriented mindset, and utilizes in-depth understanding of accounting principles, and company practices to achieve results. This role will have significant visibility to Senior Management as well.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities (Other duties may be assigned)
- Ad hoc analysis of financial and operating metrics to support business requirement(s).
- Investigate monthly variances in balance sheet and income statement (revenue, COGS and inventory related accounts), providing variance explanations for monthly reporting.
- Ensure monthly accurate reconciliation/analyses of balance sheet accounts under their respective accounting areas.
- Work closely with the Materials, Operations, and IT teams to ensure inventory accuracy, including monitoring receiving, production, shipping, cut-off, cycle count program, and physical inventories.
- Conduct regular reviews of production order variances to identify unusual variances and report root cause.
- Provide internal and external audit support for related revenue, COGS, and inventory transactions.
- Responsible for month-end closing related to revenue, COGS, and inventory business processes, ensuring compliance with Company policies and procedures and U.S. GAAP.
- Review revenue recognition and sales cut-off criteria per sales contracts and ensure that monthly revenue recognition is in line with U.S GAAP.
- Review and prepare the various monthly inventory related accruals (in-transit, freight, surcharge, invoiced not received, etc.).
- Understand variances to budget and prior year and identifying opportunities for cost reductions and improvements associated with Company’s Labor and Overhead.
- Conduct business process reviews to evaluate the design and operating effectiveness of SOX internal controls over revenue and inventory cycles.
Jobsite
Four days onsite in the Chicago office and remote on Fridays.
Qualifications
An employee in this position should have the following education/certifications, work experience, and skill set:
Education/Certification:
- BA in Accounting is required. CPA or CPA candidate preferred.
Work Experience:
· 3-5 years accounting experience, preferably in a manufacturing environment.
Specialized Knowledge:
· Knowledge of U.S. GAAP and SEC rules and regulations.
· Knowledge of ERP (Oracle).
· Strong understanding of manufacturing accounting, variance analysis, and standard setting is highly preferred.
· Strong analytical skills; demonstrates a probing mind; thinks independently.
· Excellent computer software skills, including Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Office.
· Ability to exercise good judgment; makes decisions in logical and rational manner; demonstrates “common sense” and is practical.
· Ability to effectively communicate orally and in written reports; can crisply communicate goals and objectives; possesses the ability to respond effectively to direct questions.
· Ability to establish collaborative relationships with peers.
· Ability to adapt to and operate in a fast-paced, changing environment.
· Ability to meet tight deadlines, produce thorough, accurate work and maintain strong relationships.
